Kitchen Island size/placement?

Hey. We are remodelling our kitchen, opening it up to our living room/diner. But we are concerned about some of the layout/dimensions. Specifically, the way the new island crosses over the main door (although it is approx 2200mm away from it and 1600mm away from the cabinets next to the door). Any thoughts/advice on this or anything else about this design would be super appreciated! Thanks 👍🙏

Btw, on this plan the island is 2400x1000mm. There is 1100mm between the island and the cabinets on the left and approx 1200mm between the island and the cabinets/hallway door on the right. Bottom right is a bathroom but a) it has a sink and window and b) we will hide it with a hidden door in built in cabinetry. No choice lol! Thanks 👍

Maybe make the island smaller? The dining table is very close! On the island you could drink coffee and eat at the table.

@Norwood Architects took the words right out of my mouth. I too would not do the open shelves on the base cabinets with the clipped corner. Looks like you are going for a more modern kitchen and those don't fit the updated style I see here. As far as the double ovens, I would move them to the left one spot so they sit next to the first set of cabinets. I would also remove the last upper cabinet (on the right) and extend the open shelving. The shelves look dwarfed as they are now by the large wall of cabinets. Hopefully, removing a bank of upper cabinet and extending the shelves will help balance the proportions. I would also eliminate the shelves on the island too, but that's just more of a personal preference ;) Looks like it's going to be a gorgeous kitchen!

I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. I'm embarking on the same thing and have spent hours and hours researching!

I am planning on creating an island in my kitchen. Size will about 1200mm x 1200mm or 1200mm x 1oo0mm ( with a mini overhang). Ive been advised to put a mini spink in it but Im concerned it will be too small for a sink. Also main sink isn't too far away. I had been thinking about putting a drawer dishwasher on it too but is there any point if I don't put the mini sink in ?

Attached are drawings and an image of our new kitchen - I am struggling with best place for sink - our hob is on the back wall rather than the island - so currently island is just seating and storage. Also will include some colours I was thinking of using for cabinets - we are thinking island the darker colour with wall cabinets the brighter colour. All advice or thoughts welcome!

Thanks! The living room width is 3600mm so the dining table is like 1500-2000mm away from the island - I was worried it was too far tbh lol! Re making the island smaller; I like your design thanks. To be clear you mean shorten the width (900 instead of 1000) not the length - is that right?

Yes, 800-900 instead 1000. The length is ok. It is no necessary do it smaller. But I think it is important to have the edge of the island and the kitchen in one line.

Ah ok, thanks. Unfortunately that's not possible. It would need to be 600mm or maybe smaller! Just annoying where that door is 🙄

I wondered whether an island with a frame like this might not be too bad? The solid bit would be in line with the edge of the kitchen.

i'd keep it 1000mm deep as thats a lot nicer than 800-900 which is too skinny for my liking - especially when cooking on the island, nobody wants to sit 200-300mm away from the cooktop. yes its not ideal to be walking into the end of it, but it is what it is. i'd make it a tiny bit longer to line up with the edge of the kitchen at the dining table end though. and just check the diagonal distance from the corner of the island to the corner of the wall where the bathroom is - as that's a main walkway it needs to be at the very least 1000mm, ideally 1200mm+.

The island size is fine and all the measurements around it that you have mentioned.

The only thing that would concern me at all in the dining room table to the double doors there. I am guessing they are exterior doors so it shouldn't be a problem. It also looks like a bench diner so should be OK to push in a little?

With 2M between the dining table (pulled out) and the island, I would also consider moving a stool to the end of the island and moving the unit to replace one on the run. This allows much better communication for people sitting at the island. Something we hear a lot from people with three in a row is that it is hard to talk and they find themselves only using one or two seats as that's most comfortable. Just an idea.

Overall I love the whole thing and that it's a good use of space and dimensions which isn't always the case - so good work :)

Thanks everyone! And big thanks Create Perfect for the compliment! Re the dining table; yeah it's not super ideal but that is an external "patio" door and a bench so not too bad (at the moment actually we have it in the middle of the room - there is currently a wall between kitchen/diner). But yes, that's a great idea re the stool - I'll sketch it up and ask my partner, so thank you!
