Suggestions on Kitchen Island Lighting

Hello Houzzers,
I've been debating on what type of lighting to use above my kitchen island. We are going for more of a contemporary vibe with our entire home and have been having a difficult time deciding what kitchen lighting (style, # of pendants, etc.) to use above our island.
The island itself isn't very large/wide, so I was thinking 3 mini pendants would work best in the space. Not sure what type of style would go best and would be open to suggestions. I'm not 100% set on doing 3 pendants either if the spacing would be better with 2 full size pendants. Any help would be much appreciated, many thanks everyone!

10 years agoThese general styles work good on a small island. Just for examples, not necessarily contemporary.

10 years agoDesigners always look at pendant lighting in threes - center the middle one then hang the other two left and right about 12" apart. They should hang no lower that 36" from the counter.

Comments (11)Well, you could certainly provide some counter height stools without adding onto the counter. I would make the stools simple ones that don't call attention to themselves. Look at how the ones below are there to be sat upon but there's no overhang. The height you will need is called a counter stool. Or you have space for 2 at each end of the island with just a big of an overhang. People just like a place to perch while they chat with you while you're cooking. Comments (0)I would love some advice on finalizing a choice for island pendant lighting. My kitchen has 8 foot ceilings and the island will be 4'x6'. My husband is 6'1" so I want to make sure lighting isn't too low for his sight line but also to not have fixture too tall that it looks strange hugging the ceiling too closely. I like the seeded glass look and brushed nickel finish as it will coordinate with the glass front cabinet in wet bar area. I also prefer rod vs. chain or cord hanger. This light is 12.5" wide x 11.25" high. Would have a little longer drop from ceiling. I think I would do 2 instead of 3?? This light is 10.5" wide x 15.75" high. It would only have a 6" drop from ceiling so don't know if that is too big and too close to ceiling. Maybe do just 2 or possibly 3?? We would like some suggestions as to what flooring we should use throughout the rest of the house. Please give any comments or suggestions you might have. Kitchen has 2 pendants (A and B on plan) over an island and lighting under the top cabinets. Am wondering if I may need also some discreet light from the top as well. The top cabinets might miss some light I think. 10 years agoThe George Kovacs light above are great! Keep in mind that the lights will create a nice sculptural effect against your nice white wall above the oven/micro.

10 years agoHi Darzy, it is not installed yet; however this kitchen was my inspiration and used the same capiz shell chandelier as the one we purchased. Light and airy was what we were going for. We really did a 180 degree turn as the house we are moving from was very traditional in every sense of the word. Lots of browns, reds, yellows/golds.
