I like you idea. I guess the problem is that you have the only one light for the whole space and do not want to move electrics. You could combine spotlights and hanging lights. Please see pictures below for an inspiration.
I would also add table lights and floor lamps, so you have more options to create interesting space
I agree I would add more table lamps and floor lamps in various corners (near the sofa for one). Overhead lighting can be harsh and lamps can add softness and cosiness to a room. That’s what I’ve done and I rarely use my ceiling light. A nice cosy rug will also be good.
You can get spotlights or LED strips installed if you want and like the look. It will be a relatively straightforward job for an electrician. Personally I would switch the existing light for a nice pendant, add a freestanding lamp, a couple of table lamps and fit everything with Thread enabled bulbs so you can customise brightness, colour and mood. It would be a much more flexible and adaptable solution for a living room.
