En-suite wet room - thoughts on design?
We are due to have our en-suite bathroom renovated next month and whilst we're relatively settled on the design, we have one or two minor reservations. First and foremost, here are the drawings / renders:
We've already made a couple of minor changes to the above designs; namely a bespoke mirror to run the full length between the shower screen and far wall, the basin and swapping the standard drain for a tiled one.
The question we're having is this; is it lacking in contrast and therefore, is it a bit bland? Here are some photos of the tiles in question; in the main Bottega Caliza with Bottega Caliza Spiga on the back wall (the first two photos are similar in that sense, albeit slightly smaller than our en-suite by the looks of it):

The inspiration for the basin on the shelf came largely from this Houzz project (and whilst the drawings don't show it, it will have some subtle lighting):
Now, this is clearly a very high-end bathroom and whilst our project is by no means being done on the cheap, I accept we are different budgetary levels. The shelf is planned to be tiled in the same tile as the bulk of the walls, but as I alluded to above there is a LOT of that material.
As I'm writing and looking at the pictures I'm aware that there's something not quite right, and I do think it's the overwhelming lack of contrast. I just can't conclude what the solution is.

Comments (30)Hello the days are brightening up by now and I'm sure the room is looking less drab for it. However I think furniture rearranging will work wonders. You seem to have nice low window sills: show them off. If the sofa goes to the left between window and built-in unit you'll have a view out to the garden and more light in the room. Equally: can you fit the piano between the radiator and the double doors? Again: more light through the window. Low sills are a god-send, and so many of us are stuck with high ones. The room will feel more spacious with a good view to outdoors. The armchairs then: one to the left of the fireplace and one between the other window and piano. TV then between the two windows. (No shine on the screen) Does that fit maybe? Or do you need all five seats facing the TV? I rather like those stripy cushions. Can you find a striped wallpaper in matching colors and with an irregular pattern repeat for your accent wall? if going with wood floors how about a sheepskin rug for each of your doggies? Black or white. One last detail. A lower table for your side lamps would be good: At sofa arm or seat height. Coffee table could work in corner between window and new sofa position. Btw: I liked the suggestion to replace the cupboard doors above the fish tank with full-height ones. In some kitchen shops you can find ready-painted, wooden, panel doors that might fit. Obviously they are vertical but I think it would work either way. Any pics of your tiles? I have seen your other post and know your suite is 'traditional' but another thing to consider I guess is the cost of the mosaics. £££ using lots may mean a big dent in your budget....See MoreEn-suite layout
Comments (2)Can you change the entrance in the small ensuite to service the back bedroom; then convert the small bedroom into an ensuite for the master bedroom? If you move the wall on that room right out to the door of the master bed you'll gain, in guessing, 300mm. Ensuite at 2m*2m would be large enough, you'd then have the space for a narrow walk in wardrobe 2m*1.2m, giving a walking space 7/800mm wide, just big enough. To get natural light in the you could put glass in part of the partition walls up high, both at landing side and ensuite side. Alternatively, make small room into a jack and Jill, big saving on cleaning and make old ensuite into wardrobe....See Moredesign dilemma, changing two rooms to three!

In terms of the tiles, they are a dull (as in not shiny) rectified tile with a soft but slightly rough texture. We have three variations:
Wall (main): Bottega Caliza 45 x 120
Wall (feature): Spiga Bottega Caliza 45x120
Floor: Bottega Caliza 59.6 x 59.6The internet’s not the best medium to convey texture, but this image might give you some idea:
