Help - Studio Apartment Layout

Need help with the layout of my son’s first post-college apartment! It’s got a great water view from the windows. Need room for a living room / TV area, double bed, eating space for 2-4. Thoughts or does anyone have a similar space? TAM!

IMO a murphy bed is my go to in tese types of sapces . There are really cool ones that incorporate a sofa even. They also have much needed storage for small spaces .

Thanks! We’ve considered a Murphy bed, but my son has a bad back from a childhood kite flying injury, so not sure it’s a good option.

HI Keerthi, the project turned out well, apart from the main house, I built a 9m x 6m building which I split in 2. The front 4.5m x 6m area is used for pressuried water system, gas burner and a multi fuel burner all to one side and fuels to the other. The is a door going into rear of building the same size. Theres a 3m wide by 1.2m window to the back of the bulding looking out into the garden with a glass door to the side. Its a fabulous plastered games room and may be used as a music practice room at some stage. There is a 600m floored attic for storage. I didnt get any feedback off site but still get great ideas for finishes within Houzz. Regards

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

About your plumber saying "plumb layout is confirmed". That is a load of rubbish. It's fairly easy to move drains around (yes he might have to rip up some walls, but he can also do off-the-wall installations to avoid that). In a small bath proper placement is of the utmost importance!!! If you have the bathtub and shower next to each other that will be much better and then the glass separator idea should work. padmaramachandran's (see post above) setup sounds more reasonable to me as well (see first picture below). This is similar to your setup but as you have more space you could put in bath tub and shower where the picture only shows a bath tub. Also if you do it that way you could theoretically have a bidet or a wider wash basin (small double perhaps too). Example layout: Do you need a bathtub in the guest bath? If not you have a lot more room to work with. E.g. for a double wash basin and large walking shower and a bidet (2nd picture). Example of off-the-wall installation for toilet and bidet and a large walking shower. Finally if you ignore this advice and do it the way you planned ;) then I suggest you really thing about that glass separator. Doing it right will make a lot of difference (see 3rd picture). sorry haven't been on here much and havent had time or money to much about my room but should be getting to work in the next few weeks/month. I've added some more photos to give a better idea of the layout of the room and the dimensions. the first one is a view from the bed or the foot of the bed, so you can see the wall space isn't massive. The horrible curtains are waiting to be changed when I get all the work done! The second photo is the other wall to show where the door to the room is. Carolyn the wardrobe in the photo there is the one I'm going to put in the nook and then I was thinking of getting a carpenter to build shelving on the wall where the wardrobe currently is. Around the bed then would be more storage and shelves either side to act as bedside tables. As anyone any ideas for the type of shelving I should be looking to get built? I would be looking to hold - clothes that wouldn't be hanging like jumpers, t-shirts etc. I would definitely need an area for books/magazines, an area for toiletries and maybe then storage for items such as bed linen, blankets and random items like chargers for phones, laptops etc.

I think I'd put the TV on the wall behind the bathroom, then create two living spaces, one for lounging/TV watching and one for sleeping. Use an open bookcase as a room divider and put the bed on the long wall perpendicular to the windows. The only hiccup here is that your son will be looking at the kitchen while in bed. If possible, add drapes or sliding panels via a track on the ceiling to cover the kitchen. Some inspo photos:

I'd go on the Ikea website and look at how they put rooms together. They are very clever with small spaces, and might give you some ideas. If you go to their showroom, it might give you a good idea of how the spaces are to live in, too. Plus, their looks will work for even a stereotypical guy.

@mkcb1000 I had a typo. I meant Ikea. Apart from their small space ideas (which I think are super creative), I also like that their designs don't all shout "feminine", so there's scope for different kinds of people. I have been really impressed with this when I wander around their showrooms. Some very elegant "guy stuff".

I think I would tuck the bed into the corner by the bathroom so it is not the focal point when you walk into the apartment and it is not right next to the kitchen.

There are no dimensions, but if room, I would put the head of the bed on the bathroom wall. Put a small seating area by the window.

Post dimensions. Do you need a bed for one, two all the time, two occasionally? What is the budget?

A murphy bed is the best since you choose the mattress and they are very easy to open and close I did my Aunts when I was 6

We have camped for 40 years and I hated the ones that you have to make the beds up every night and morning. NO! to a murphy bed for every day. It would be okay in an office, but NOT every night.

Here's one idea for the layout. I don't think there's room for bed, living and dining spaces. I would get a coffee table that converts to dining height and store a couple of folding chairs for dinner guests. The shelving unit at the end of the bed could be full height with tv on living room side. Or, it could be a lower dresser or console with tv that could swivel from living room to bed.

I like your son’s layout, except that there’s no place to eat. How about a foosball table that can also be a dining table, and two adjustable chairs instead of bean bags?
