cost of tiling a floor

We have a floor area of 60 sqm to tile. We are using a porcelain tile and having got a quote a few months ago, the tiler has said he made a mistake with his labour quote. He had said £2000 labour charge but has said it will now be £3000 basing this on £50 per sqm. We are wondering if he is just upping the cost and chancing his hand, or is the cost reasonable and he just made a mistake with the original quote? Entirely possible, but how would we know?
He will be removing old ceramic tiles first, screeding or crack mats and then tiling. I think our issue is one of trust and confidence. On the face of it, the chap is personable and appears to be competent.

As ever with these things, we did have others around but then they never came back with quotes. This guy did and now we are at critical point in a project….of course!

Hi @mjdpower, My suggestion is to go to a couple of floor specialist and ask as they may come up with something different. Whatever you do keep in consideration the size of the room and think on a long term: a poor quality finish could effect your property price in a space as important as the kitchen. I will try something that allow you to go back to your original tiles floor if things do not work out the way you want them to go. A cheap way is to cover the tiles with vinyl and here is how to do it: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-install-vinyl-flooring-over-ceramic-tiling#b the adhesive should not stain or damage the tiles (ask the manufacture before doing it anyway!) and you have a large choice of design and colours. Paint tiles could be another option, not my favourite but an option. I found this blog where Curry Kay describe step by step how she's did it. adding a small bathroom extension to garage. 5ft wide and 12 ft long. Wet room on the end wall, whb in the middle and toilet on the other end wall. I would like to have a slate tile on the floor and walls of the wet room section. Should I tile the entire room floor in the slate too?

Cheers for that,. Ya, think you could be right about the border and to be honest it wouldn’t be the same without it so that’s causing me to lean towards timber. I’m putting paneling half way up left hand side of the hallway. Here’s photo of space from opposite angle. Ignore all the bits in the way!! There’s a larder going too left hand corner and coat cupboard on left inside the door.

I think you will need a carpet runner in the hallway to reduce noise from either wood or tile. I would definitely use tile in the kitchen and bathroom, for ease of cleaning. Wearing rubber soled shoes instead of high-heeled shoes or boots indoors will also keep the noise level down.
