painting cupboards

Our kitchen cupboards are wood and I’d like to paint them. I did a sample door with farrow and ball estate emulsion and it looked great, but when my daughter touched it (when it was dry!) it left fingerprints that won’t wipe off. Any recommendations for a good type of paint for kitchen cupboard doors?

Emulsion is for walls. It’s not hardwearing enough for wood. Cupboards can be painted in Satinwood or Eggshell. Oil is more hardwearing but has a stronger smell and voc’s than water based, which isn’t quite as hardwearing. Chalk paints are also not hardwearing enough for a kitchen door. Make sure you use primer first. It’s a great way to update a kitchen.

Thanks Sonia. Great advice. I read their website before buying and it said ok for kitchen cupboards, but clearly not. Thank you.

I would pick my flooring first. Then I would paint the walls. Then have a look at the room and see how you like it before you paint the cupboards or the brick. Do it in steps because I think your brick could look quite nice and I like your cupboards the way they are. Just don't jump too fast painting things that you can't reverse. It may be that you will still want to paint the brick and cupboards but better to see how things look before you do. You have a lovely space !

A soft mossy or grey green would be my first impulse but Sarah's dark blue looks good. It depends on your kitchen ware. White porcelains will pop with the blue and earthy stoneware will go more with the soft greens. I'd add a shelf to extend from the cabinet across the tile and a pot rack or hooks over the stove.

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

Have a read of this https://paintersworld.co.uk/painters-advice/best-paint-for-kitchen-cupboards. My friend has used the Zinsser Allcoat (mixed to a Farrow and Ball colour from Decorating Centre Online - DCO) and she loves it. It has built in primer and Zinsser is a very reputable brand. It also lists a Itikkurila paint too - I think these are from Finland. I’ve used a different one of their paints on my shed and it is amazing stuff. I think both of these paints are water based, but with special technical properties that make them as good as oil based.

I painted mine a few years ago to update the look before selling. I used Dulux water based Eggshell after priming. It took a while what with the initial clean, sand, door removal, filling and sanding door knob holes, one coat of primer on both sides, two coats of top coat, all with a light sand on between. I applied using a roller and purchased a finishing brush to brush out the roller marks and achieve a smooth finish. It took two weeks after completing painting to fully cure. However, after this time, it was very hard-wearing.

Hi, yes i would recommend Reener paint, can be mixed to any colour and also great finish and durable.
