Sub Base Depth Patio

Hi I'm going to do a 3.6m x 3.6m patio, I'll be using, new paving, but nothing fancy just plain 600mm x 50mm, with a mortar base of 40mm.So what depth should my sub base be.
I'm reading that the standard should be 75mm, just wondering though could I get away with 50mm, it isn't soft soil, and fairly untouched, apart from me digging out the weeds, there's lots of stones all sizes and shapes in the soil as well so I'm going to separate them and use as part of the sub base, though I will use proper mot type 1 as well, just trying to save on sub base if I can maybe squeeze by with just a tonne, or would the stones I have not mix well with the mot type 1.
I had a look on paving expert UK, and it seems that the usual depth is between 75 - 100 for patios, but it is a little vague in areas, and says that sometimes no sub base is needed, so I'm thinking then why not 50mm as I have clay soil, I'm a novice I've layed a small path, and done a couple of other jobs, but the patio will be more of a challenge, so I want to get it right and have it look nice, and as I said I'm using 600mm x 50mm, so I'm not sure because of this reason you can get away with a smaller depth of sub base, or its the total opposite because I'm using a heavier slab I need a thicker base, Thanks.

Without a decent sub base (type one) the patio will move in time. Soil is very unstable especially if it gets wet. We laid paving onto sand with blobs of mortar many years ago and after a few years it was a mess. You can save money on the paving, for example by using concrete slabs, but not the sub base.

So forget about the stones I have then, and just lay all base with type 1, do you think 75mm base is sufficient.

My brother is a builder and he laid my porcelain patio. He used Type 1 base, then spread cement under each slab, one by one and laid each slab on top. Finally he grouted. I will ask him for depth of type 1 base and get back to you. This is patio in progress and last pic is the finished patio.

Clay expands and contracts a lot depending how wet it is, especially near the surface. We often put in a 100mm concrete base. Which ever way you do it don't scrimp on the sub base.

My brother says if it is to be walked on he would lay 100-125mm type 1. He has been a builder for many years. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
