Countertop Spacing

Do you know how many inches between the stovetop countertop and island? We will be remodeling a galley kitchen and I’d like to know what the appropriate spacing is between the two opposing countertops. Thank you.

Hi Davidia, thank you for your question! Minimum clearance required between countertops is 36", but in front of a range or refrigerator we give a minimum of 42" (prefer 48" or more, really) to make sure there is enough room to open/close appliances. Thank you so much. We currently have 48 inches between countertops, but one is only about 24 inches deep. If we were to put a range there and extend that countertop, it would cut the space to about 36 inches which is a pretty tight squeeze. Thanks again.

Hi, I would appreciate some advice. We wish to redesign our kitchen (230x270cm). I've attached a floor plan of our ground floor. The 230cm wall between the kitchen and living area currently has a narrow service hatch (40x100cm). The other 230cm wall has a large window with sink, dishwasher and washing machine beneath. What do you think would make best use of the space: (a) current layout minus service hatch, (b) open up service hatch to ceiling and place banquette in living area (c) knock the wall between living room and kitchen, and close up the current door-way into the kitchen (converting this area to counter space, making it a U shaped kitchen). So I think we have decided to stick with the layout that we have and just block up the double doors. I hope it and it will be nice because I have lost a lot of sleep worrying about it. Thanks for letting me post here.

Hi guys, we've bought a house off the plans. It's a 4 bed end of terrace in a new Estate. We got to visit our house in a site visit recently and the kitchen is smaller than we expected. It's always hard to visualise space. I've included a plan below. The kitchen is 5m wide and flat against one wall. There are 2 doors for utility and family room in a corner that causes issues for the layout. Ideally we would want an island and a good long dining table. We can't find a way to place both in the space without completely cramping the kitchen. The reason for the island is for additional cabinets and counter space. Another option was for the double doors into the living room to be a solid wall, and for us to extend the kitchen around to the full wall, thereby eliminating the need for an island and allowing plenty of room for a good sized dining table. Another option is to put in a nice large island and moving the dining table into the family room, but it seems odd to be creating a seperate dining room. I would love to hear some of your thoughts on options of keeping the double doors, island and dining table.
