New fireplace dilemma

Hi,
I am getting a new white marble fireplace as in first photo but with a brass and cast iron insert instead (2nd photo) I know brass is back in style for handles, taps, furniture etc. Does this also apply to fireplaces? The guy in the shop said no-one has got a brass fireplace in years, instead it is all chrome or black. I already have a brushed gold mirror and curtains in the room so I was going to keep a gold and
white theme but I don't want it to look dated.

Hi Aisling,

In my opinion the black insert is a much more contemporary look over the brass one. A lot of the current trends in fireplaces are linear black incerts. The black insert would also be easier to work with if in a couple of years you decided to change out the mirror or the curtin pole, you would not be tied to designing around the brass.

I have attached two pictures below of a white fire place with a black insert and gold mirror and i think it works really nicely.

You could do a black paint trim over the wooden bits. It would go with the work tops. But not so much with the creamy doors; Or get all of the kitchen units spray painted white? I think if you try to match the floor with the wood of the units in the kitchen you may leave yourself open to a mismatch or even just an overload of wood. I didn't feel there was enough black there as the island top kind of took me by surprise on first seeing it. But could you remove that granite altogether and see how it looks then? Maybe it's the black that's the problem not the wood at all

Layout dilemma/ possible kitchen extension or remodel

Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S. Conservatory is a junk room at the moment, facing a fence on the right hand side. The garage is used as a utility.
