Covering decking

I have a decked area that I have had covered with a lean-to for a couple of years. I want to fill the walls of the lean-to with wood and glass. I also want to cover the decking with flooring to stop draughts. Would this be okay or should I use some kind of vapour barrier between the decking and the wood flooring.

We did a similar thing. We originally had a verandah (so the hardwood floor, roof and spindles with handrail around). If the heavy rain came at an angle the floor got soaked so we put a new roof on and filled it in. Some doors are bifold so we can open them in the heat. We put down sisal natural flooring direct on the hardwood floor (the floor has some small gaps and is not butted up length to length) and it has proved a great investment. Here’s some pix

Hi Daisy,

Your old lean-to looks amazing, very similar to what we will be doing. However I want to cover up the decking with wood flooring (chipboard tongue and groove) then carpet it. What I was worried about is whether the decking would get damp under the flooring and end up rotting both. I really want to get rid of all draughts from the floor and heat the room in the winter so we can use it then too. It gets pretty cold up here in Scotland so I am insulating the walls and roof and fitting double glazing.

I really think it's the plants that are supposed to be the center of attraction so I have a hard time thinking of anything better than painting the wall gray and the planters charcoal. However, trying to keep an open mind I did locate the photo above with yellow planters, which would be pretty against a gray wall. But looking at your very lovely blue door, I could see repeating that very same color on the planters and leaving the wall gray. It's always a good thing to repeat an existing color when it looks as great as that one does. That blue would be dynamite on a planter filled with green plants and colorful blooms.

Thank you for you suggestion... I was actually thinking that I saw a huge wooden world map in dunne stores and I could improvise small holders and stick them on the map so they could hold the packs of cards and show the countries they were bought from... I will try and do it ASAP and will upload a photo with the result ;) ... Thank you again, great inspiration...

Hi Antoinette I too live in Ireland in a Semi Detached. My husband who's the one with green fingers has transformed our garden into an oasis you wouldn't think we lived in a housing estate. You might start with cleaning the slabs. You could change the edging tile with a contrasting one to set it off. Use different sizes and colours of pots. A seating area in one section. Use lots of different colours and plants which are ok to grow in pots. Just seeing all the colours come to life in Spring and Summer will cheer you up. Here are some photos that were taken at the end of summer last year the leaves have started falling from the trees. Oh yeah still have the clothes line up too.

Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

I think you should be fine. You will have the wind blowing underneath to keep it aired. My old carpet was seagrass and that had a latex backing so perhaps look for something similar. We use our ’garden room’ constantly from spring to autumn. It was a good investment for us.
