It can be either, to have it re circulating a carbon filter would have to be added/fitted to the underneath of the motor as there isn't one fitted in the pics. If it is being used in re circulating mode you still need to allow the air to come out of the canopy back into the room with some ducting as this air is damp. The carbon filter helps remove cooking smells and they do need replacing with use.
