Anyone know what this is?

It sits in the corner of the kitchen where the old fridge was. There used to be a gas cooker in a different part of the kitchen but that has been changed to electric and the whole gas supply is limited to the garage now, with nothing coming into the kitchen.
I'm thinking it's a disused gas pipe??
How would I get rid of it?
