Mezzanine in a studio apartment?
Hi!
I am in the process of purchasing a 7m x 3.8m studio apartment which has 2.8m heigh ceilings (all measurements are approximate). This apartment already has a 'storage deck' above about 1/3 of the apartment. I love the idea of having a mezzanine and would poss just lower part of the storage deck. but I have no experience with this or apartments that have this feature. Are the ceilings too low to accommodate this? I would use the upper space to sleep and the lower for poss seating/desk area or wardrobe? I have been looking on Tiny house storage/design layouts, but i am still unclear if this particular apartment would be able to accommodate this feature.
I am welcome to any and all suggestions, even if mezzanine is not possible!
Please see pic of the floor plan, the dashed line is where the storage deck comes too, its maybe about 2ft lower from the ceiling.

3 years agoHi,
Interesting thing you have here.Lets try some rough maths:
- 1m from the mattress surface would probably be ok for the bed above (you can stretch it to 900 but not ideal, especially for someone taller)
- 200mm mattress
- about 150mm the deck (maybe less 100 if you do it from some proper metal frame)
You are left with approx. 1,45m of room in the seating below.
I'd suggest you try and simulate the situations above (sleeping area, getting off bed, seating under the bed) and see if it works for you.
So much potential for interior design here. If you based in or around London we'd love to assists with the whole process. Don't hesitate to get in touch!Andre

Thank you very much for your response. It sounds like there might not be enough height to go though with this idea then, as you suggest I will simulate these actions to see, but will start thinking about other ways to best utilise the space. Unfortunately I am not based near London, the apartment is located in Leeds so a bit too far!
Thank you again for your help though, it is reassuring to know you think it has potential even though it is small

3 years agoKeep the storage deck. I've lived in a 25m2 studio with 2.7m ceilings for years and I was glad I did not put in a loft bed. Just make clever use of wardrobe/bookcase to create a bedstead.

3 years agoHello Looby_Liz I agreed with rinked keep the storage. My first flat was a studio and it was always storage the problem. I do not know how the storage is used but you can have a pull out desk from it. A storage wall keeping the bedroom private to the rest of the flat. Storage shelves wardrobe on the bedroom side could be made or hacked but so that the hangers are flat to the wall, so minimising space. Like you see in shops, but better. On the opposite side in your living area you can have some clever storage for your desk., dinning area. Have a look at Quantum Tech HD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkEMzxxnKUQ some amazing ideas. Approx 3mins 40sec in, is a great idea for a desk/dressing table. But the whole video will give you some ideas. I do not know where they are based? But there must be other companies too? And if you are a DIY-ist or know someone who is, some look like modern ikea style and they may have the desk, table, bed fixings to create similar. Have a look at modern Japanese interiors to get some clever ideas too.
In feng shui you would not have your bedroom door opposite the bathroom. So needs a door to keep private if not there already. Keeping things off the floor helps stops the room from feeling enclosed. But clever storage that conceals for eg. an ottoman to under bed storage beds, (the designs have much improved since my day). Steps can be storage. And your door to the bedroom could be disguised too as a continuation of your shelving. Lighting and flooring can zone your areas and create different moods.
As it is a small space that has to do everything in your life. Possibly "live" with it for awhile with the things to see how it feels, where the light changes during the day and night. The colour changes. See where you walk how the kitchen works and then with your research you will know where to place or rearrange your personal things. And don't forget plants and pictures with the lighting. Have fun.christineacy
3 years agoAdding to rinked plan. There is this combination and I have seen it in a store, probably in London.

3 years agoI also don’t think there is sufficient height to deliver both a desk and bed.
If it were my property I would be looking at multi purpose furniture

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoAnother. Stairs removed, perhaps even the entire storage mezzazine. Might want to add storage above the bathroom and kitchen, with a ladder on a rail, which would hang in front of the bathroom wall when not used. I actually loved my 2.7m ceilings.
Or a plaform bed with storage underneath.

3 years agoMore of a bedroom (hang a curtain in front of the bed?) with actual space to move around.
