Need help Furnishing AZ House, starting with nothing

We just purchased a home in AZ and will be furnishing the whole place. I am thinking modern rustic and want to start with the great room and dining area where will be watching TV and spending a lot of our time (besides golfing :). We are keeping none of this furniture, it is the sellers. Lighting and furniture are first on the list. We are going to live with the current flooring for awhile. I would love some ideas on how,to furnish and decorate. I am afraid of buying the wrong furniture and regretting it later. Thanks!

You didn't mention a budget for your furnishings and if you want top quality furniture or things that will work but aren't terribly expensive. Last year we bought a second home in Florida, and there wasn't even a teaspoon in the place. We have nearly finished furnishing it now. Since it is a second home and we are retired, we aren't looking for top quality items that will last forever.

I decided on a general color scheme and that I wanted a more modern look to go with the architecture of our place. IKEA, Homegoods, World Market online, and secondhand places (my favorite is the Restore shop at Habitat for Humanity because they get a lot of very nice donations in our area) have been my go-to places. Of course, the pandemic has made this much more a challenge than it normally would be.

Congratulations! Home ownership is overwhelming and awesome all at the same time. You didn’t really have a question in your post but I would like to offer a few insights.
Choose whatever design style that suits your and your family the most. Custom design is all about infusing your space with what you love and works for you - just in a functional and aesthetic way.
When designing your home it should be done all at once, as mush as possible, on paper. By planning the entire space a cohesive finish space can be achieved even though it is done in stages. You do not need to know the exact pattern that will be on the tile in the kitchen or the material of the bed in the master in this planning but it is awesome if you do. What you want is to create a design binder. Draw initial sketches of your floor plan or if you have the plans copy it and add to your binder. It’s helpful to have one as a complete floor plan and then enlarge each room to a page and use that as you plan each room. Make lots of notes... if you plan to remove or add walls. Note any other planned architectural changes you might make. Create a mood board page that shows the colors you like etc. and play with ideas for dispersing them cohesively through your home. Collect pictures and add your favorite. Pinterest is a great source and just print your most favorite options.
Now take the floor plan of the room you will start on first. Measure the walls, window, doors, and ceiling heights. Plans are not always accurate so measure even if the plan notes some measurements.

Measure out the best size sofa, chairs, and table you feel fit the space the best. Take these measurements with you while shopping. Furniture always looks smaller in showrooms and online pics.
You can plan each room using the same method. This is a condensed explanation of what all to add to a design binder but my comment is getting a bit long. Basically list all information that you think you will ever need in an organized way that you can access it and edit as often as you need to as ideas and visions change and expand as you go through the process.

I would suggest a more modern, streamlined ceiling fan, as well. You could alternatively use a light fixture/chandelier - all dimmable. I know it gets hot in AZ.

Ok - currently saving money on carpet; already have pool table and lamp for this area. What about creating different seating areas in the room. You said there are built ins? Computer station? Family using this space. Here is MY suggestion: I would use MORE than one rug - each for specific areas of this room. You can have the sisal berbers made to fit - and I think ONE large one would actually end up being a little messy as this would be huge - and could get off bounds? (out of shape) You could have these bound and use them to create different areas within the larger space? Is that a gold or a taupe or beige color between the red pattern? Here is my suggestion : the opposite side of the color wheel tones down the other - since this is a red color - how about using a very soft BLUE/GREY on the ceiling? Or a very soft Grey/Blue? And a very soft taupe or mocha color on the walls - something which is within the SAME tonal family as the NON-red portion of your rug? This should go nicely with your brown sofa and the sisal or other type berbers? YES - get one larger one (RUG for the area in front of the TV . . . large enough to go from the baseboard area - to completely under your sofa? BTW - LAZYBOY makes beuatiful furniture - and you do NOT have to get the plumped and rolled ubiquitious leather chair. OR, I can personally, highly recommend FurnitureLa South, in Hickory N.C. - and they will deliver for FREE! Love that! They have a style for everyone and this is where they actually make the furniture. They sell ALL manufacturers at cost. Well not Lane or Ethan Allen. My one last thought - since this is such a very large space - I would also get a rather substantial and DARK drapery rod using finials - and extend the width of the drapes to help balance the room on the other side with the windows. Since you have built ins on the other side - this will help balance the space visually. IF you do not like the color of the fixture material on the pool table light - you can get any finish you desire in a rustoleium paint - I would consider spray painting this something in the neighborhood of a oil rubbed bronze; or something with more of a dark patina? This would also help balance out the room and bring focus into the space you are utilizing - the rest will fade away. SO - ceiling paint a must; paint the trim or add a more traditional trim - at least 5 inches in depth; TWO separate rugs - not one big one - at least one for now for the TV area; Extend your drapes and raise them almost to the ceiling to help balance the room; Darker drape rod - and double the fabric for your drapes to make them look fuller; Spray paint a darker finish on to the pool table fixture. Use a tone of paint on the wall which will go with the tone of the other color of your rug! Another thought: You consider finding an old wooden bench - or church pew ??? that would be fun; you could place facing into the space around the pool table area? This will give folks a place to sit and could help further define your separate areas?

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

Julie, it is a 2nd home in a retirement community and we don’t need high quality that would last forever either. I also won’t feel bad replacing it 10 years from now than either. I want to go with neutrals like grey, beige, and Carmel.
