Fire Place in Awkward Position

Hi all, so we are soon to do our extension which will see the current living room made smaller. We have a fireplace which is currently central to the room, but won’t be when we extend. You can see from the picture that it would actually be right at the end of the room toward the wall.

I’m unsure what to do as thinking it would look odd not be central? Other option would be to block it up and have a wood burner in the middle.

Does anyone have any ideas or inspiration?

you could just turn it into a feature
as you can see in the background of this pic they have paneling... so you could have a fireplace and then continue on the paneling on that wall? if that makes any sense?

I’ve added another photo to give a better idea. I’ve cut the photo off on the right to where the wall will be.

The small strange window will be gone, as will the porch to the left so that space will be open.

We won’t be keeping the fire surround and are probably going to replace it with a wood burner.

So question is, will it look strange in the same location and how could we best arrange the room? Or other option would be to build a fake chimney breast in the centre with a wood burner.

Would appreciate opinions :)

That wall paper doesn't go at all.. and you don't need wallpapers.. how about a cream shade on the fireplace part of wall with oxblood coloured (from your curtain flowers) horizontal band below mantel, while the rest of the walls be lilac? Ever considered stoenwork similar to your fireplace on that wall? Also lower the hung photographs.. should be at least four inches below the windows' top edge.. Your sofas are quite dark. they seem aubergine.. is there any way you can at least place one of the sofas across from a window so that light falls on it? right now it is in the shadows backed against the windows, therefore more dark (does it seem so when you're in the room too?) The mirror (though nice) is too solid and thick for the mantel. can it go on a clearer stretch of some wall? fourth wall? What is the fourth wall like? idk how the fourth wall is like but how about angling large sofa at 90 degrees to the window with the single seater also angled in the corner where the lamp is.. and place the side table with lamp infront of the window (i-e at the corner of the 'L' made by t he sofas).. If possible get lighter lamp shades (cream).. Love the cushions.. place two of these cushions on the single seater to relieve the large sofa.. Please turn the rug lengthwise along the length of the sofa.. get a glass/metal table (if tots allow) or cream ottomon as center table.. The TV is too large for the rack, no? The vase is being wasted under the tv.. Florals and stripes can be mixed depending on print.. but if you bring anymore florals in this room, it would be best to match the flower shape to those in the curtains. I find the curtains too short...

I second Carolyn's motion to check out IKEA for a media cabinet although I feel you will need something around 30-36" tall with this particular TV. It appears to me that you have two matching loveseats or small sofas. Is this correct? In any scenario, if you want cozy, several have already offered thoughts that will help. First, although ideal, I do not feel that your cocktail table has to center on both upholstered pieces. You could center it on the fireplace and work from there, whether parallel or perpendicular. I agree that the upholstery needs to come forward and that the two large pieces should create an L formation. the chair should go to the left of the fireplace, at an angle. I know: Now it is partially in front of the TV. If the TV is on an appropriately scaled media piece, this allows TV viewing over the chair back from all seats in the room except the chair. At risk of being presumptuous, I would suggest that the TV need not be visible from EVERY seat in the room. Greys are definitely hot right now and I love them, but choose wisely. Greys combined with this intense red and black can plunge you squarely back into the 80's. Consider very warm greys, mocha's or green-greys. When you land your color, paint the walls, out onto the underside of the tray and onto the front facing edge of the tray all the same color. This will enhance the architecture of the tray and unify it as an architectural UNIT, enhancing the volume and dimensionality of this feature. As for the pale blue, I must say, I don't understand that at all in this room. (No offense mforr) Now, add a texture to the highest central section of ceiling. Think, grass cloth, faux finish or just a deeper version of the wall color. I agree with Carolyn that the panels are covering too much of your window and that you should consider losing the tie-backs, which are a bit cutesy. In a perfect world, or if you are up for it, I would replace them with something visually lighter, something with a large open airy pattern. I would make the cocktail table metal and glass or wood and glass and modern, even sculptural. (maybe a Noguchi repro?...) Large scaled art on the long wall, as suggested earlier and some greenery. You have a great foundation on which to build. Good Luck!

I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Good luck and enjoy your home.

I think it might work better to have blinds on the wall with the smaller windows (perhaps in a plain colour) and have curtains on the main stretch of windows, using the existing curtains to replace the small roman blinds. This would allow the fantastic view to be the main focus. I do think plain curtains would work well here but you perhaps aren't keen to change them as they are new? Could they be used elsewhere? I also agree re moving the sofas so they aren't at angles, it looks a bit strange. Maybe try them in a u shape around the fire. And perhaps painting the door frame white might make the room feel calmer. Where did you find your lovely footstool btw?

I honestly don't think it will be a huge deal to have the fireplace to the side (I'm usually very OCD about having things symetrical) if the fire surround is going also that sortof means it won't be such a huge chunky thing and you could tone it down..
of you brought a wood burner you could get one of those long tall ones and then almost turn that corner into the 'cosy' area- I'm afraid I don't have an image of this but my friend has done it and it looks really good
you can still have the sofas boardering the room the whole way round but just have the log burner in the corner

Thank you, I’m just finding it so difficult to picture it and have spent hours looking through Pinterest for ideas but most seem to have the fire central in the room! Just looking at saving time and money where possible.

Does anyone else have any photos of something similar? Thanks :)

as you can see they have in the first pic 'framed' the fireplace with two chairs which you could do then work round the room with your remaining sofas
and in the other two pics u can see a corner fireplace...
not sure if any of those help you visualise it better

It’s hard to find any good photos. Here‘s a few. I guess what they’ve tried to do is balance it visually? They’ve also all balanced the black?

Thank you both for the photos. I quite like the last one although still don’t think I’m happy with the non central position 😞 probably cost way too much to do it centrally but I guess it’s either that or just not have a fire! Just love it on winter evenings!!

Tricky one! Some of the modern ones look really good IMO offcentre (in fact probably better than central) but then that’s not the look you’re after plus you don’t need a flue for them all!

That does look lovely! Although a little too modern for me. Would love a cosy living room with dark walls. We’ll probably use the new kitchen extension more in the day and the living room will be more for evening I’d imagine. Thanks for the ideas though :)

I like it but yes would not sit comfortably in my house 😂

Maybe get a few quotes for a central log burner and/or look at some of the electric versions.some of these look pretty realistic with faux flues
