It depends on what type of lamp is in the fixture. I used to run into this issue occasionally working at a lighting showroom. The answer can be as simple as making sure you use a light bulb with the correct voltage. No need to change wires, etc. Bulb just needs to be the same voltage to be compatible...this is typical for your standard incandescent light bulbs like an A-lamp...or Edison lamp. This is NOT going to be the case if you have low voltage fixture a transformer involved. In that case you would have to change out the transformer to one capable of handling a different voltage load. Stick with line voltage fixture, and simply making sure the bulb you use has the right voltage, it's a pretty simple fix.

How about BM dove white on all the walls with a navy on the window wall,that wood give plenty of light in the room while using your favorite color.Lots of color goes well with navy ,kelly green ,lime green ...yellow ,orange,hot pink

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. hello there. How about two wall sconces, one on either side of the mirror, and a roof light in the centre. I can't help with particular ones/ where to source them, but I think in this space, something rounded or square will work. You can also consider a light at the shower
