Fireplaces Design Dilemma

Original or replacements?

Just pulled off the board over my fireplace and found this behind! Flat was built about 1900, thinking the tiles could fit the edwardian/arts and crafts but unsure.

Any experts out there that can weigh in?

Oh absolutely! Hoping some tiles that are matched under the cream ones... and to figure out what goes in the centre!

Well we live in a flat on the 4th floor in Edinburgh city. So we loved the thought of being able to expose the original stone walls of the flat. You can see from the pictures that we had it done for the kitchen and lounge. Since everything of ours are modern, the stone wall really brings an edge to the design. And in the lounge, we painted it the Farrow & Ball Downpipe which we think really sets it off next to the stone. Especially with the mouldings on the window, the lounge has become quite a grand looking space even without any furnishings. And we didn't even get to varnish the walls as we liked the way it looked now. There doesn't seem to be any problems with the dust coming off the walls.

Hi David, If you could provide photos of the property that would be very helpful. Also, as jonathandb1972 said, any plans would be greatly appreciated here, so there is something to work with. If no plans available, even a crude drawing will be useful to help visualise the layout. What style would you like to achieve? (contemporary, country etc.). You said you'd like the extension to incorporate your current kitchen. What else would you like to have there, as it is going to be 2 storeys extension? Bedroom with en-suite? If you provide more information I can create couple of ideabooks for you to start with.

Lovely room. I think spots would work although I do love a light fitting over a table. If it's an are where you read etc there may not be enough light there if you do decide to go with the light fitting so you may need a couple of spots also

Ah I see. The hearth is currently made out of (painted) tiles?

Yes! certainly not the same as the blue. Also found these under a fireplace in the bedroom which are beautiful

The surround looks original in style. I’m not sure whether the blue tiles and the silver surround is, but it doesn’t matter. They have a 1950s vibe. Wouldn’t it look fab tiled in similar green tiles to the ones you found? So many options and it looks like it was used as an open fire once upon a time. Here’s an idea below which is an homage to that era, but not to everyone’s taste!

I'm unsure too, if they're 50's as you say I would remove the tiles. No idea how to get a good idea or not though!

I’m not 100% sure but they just don’t ring true as 1900s? Be interesting to see what other Houzzers think! 😊
