Living Rooms Design Dilemma

Hi guys I have bought my first home but really do not like the chimney breast paper, I am needing ideas of colour schemes, originally I liked deep blue, tan sofa and bits of gold but feel it wouldn't fit with the style of the house. It is next to the kitchen which the units are dark grey. Have not bought furniture yet but was looking at oak parquet style tv unit. Wondered what peoples ideas are?

The paper is nice, but I agree it wouldn’t suit your preferred colour scheme. Tan sofas are wonderful as they go well with dark colours like navy, and with off whites too for a more boho/Scandi feel. I don’t think you have to decorate your home to reflect the age of it, after all very few people in Victorian houses have fussy wallpaper and chintz popular in Victorian times! Keep original features like fireplaces and picture rails but decorate with a more modern twist. Here’s a few tan sofa decor ideas, one with white walls, one with grey and the last with navy.

From the looks of things, that really is the only place for the sectional. So...can you pull it out just a foot maybe away from the window? Move your tv over the stove if safe to do and try a big plant in that corner where the tv is now. Your painting behind some is way too big for that wall. Move to opposite wall. I would remove the black loves eat and replace with two reading chairs and maybe that end table you have by the sofa. For window treatments I just do not see drapes/curtains working in this room with that sectional.

I think the only place you could put a tv is probably the corner by the window...over the fireplace is probably too high. a walnut floor and new fresher paint colour would be lovely, would you consider painting the skirting boards and fireplace white or off white to modernise them a bit? we've painted the skirting in our living room (also a walnut floor) and it looks so much better than before. (Have yet to get around to the rest of the house!!)

Difficult to say without knowing the style of your furniture you have/like. One thing I noticed, is that the previous owners did have the curtains just above the window frame. It looks better if you hang them closer to the ceiling. Makes the ceiling appear higher. Also, if you are going for curtains too, have the rods wide enough to be able to have the curtains next to the windows instead of in front of them, when open. I'd advise you to create one or more ideabooks here on Houzz, so we can see what style you like.

New living room opened up.. And I am completely lost with decorating.. Painting colours really everything I get overwhelmed when I try make a start.. We have moved into it but consists of 3seater brown leather couch and double seater and single seater none matching.. We have carpet on the floor until pipes are ran under floor for radiators eventually it will be wood or laminate flooring.. Huge mat there.. Curtains that I am sick of.. No photos on wall as unsure about sizes and colours of photo frames and positioning.. It's a very big room high ceilings.. Red brick fireplace.. Need loads of advise to have a nice relaxing homely feel.. Family 5kids 2adults
