What to do/repair damage to lower side pillars where some idiot from the past has chipped away at it for whatever reason. How to develop the inside, concrete, plaster, tiles?
I’d suggest some sandblasting or if you’re into hard graft wire brushing to clean it up first. The chipped stone may not look so obvious if the surrounding stone is the same colour, and the blasting will smooth the chipped edges. Then repoint the bricks with lime mortar, not concrete so it can breathe. I had a similar ish issue with a cracked lintel that someone had put a metal plate over! Good luck.
If the sides are stable, you could attach a surround to it. You could scrub the inside bricks with hot soapy water, then create a base from stone or tiles. Are you wanting to use it as an open fire? I opened up a boarded fireplace, removed the packing bricks and rubble, scrubbed the bricks, laid a Sandstone paving hearth and then bought a wooden surround from B&Q and painted it white. If you are not using it for a real fire, have a look at Ellie’s post a few days ago where she is transforming her fireplace. Here’s mine
