Old gas fire help

Hi guysLooking for some inspiration as to what to do with this. The gas fire appears to be very old and isnt working (No gas coming in to it at the moment I think). Its in a 1900 terrace house (front room). Was thinking of either ripping the whole thing out and selling it or trying to update it. Was thinking of taking the wooden mantle piece down and replacing the hearth tiles. Is it worth saving? And is it safe given the apparent age of it?
