Fire places help

Hello All

I'm wondering if someone can give me some insight,

I recently moved into a new property that has 4 fireplaces. 2 of each (photos attached).

The most pertinent one, are the ones with marble around. These have a copper pipe standing out in the middle and I'm puzzled on how to make it work.

Can someone shed some light?

the grey cast iron ones, I presume are the traditional ones to light with coal or wood. Please correct me if I'm wrong as these are in 2 bedrooms.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The pipe in the marble one may be a gas pipe where someone may have had a gas fire inserted there. If it is, then a gas engineer will be able to remove it and seal the end for you. It may be an idea to get all the chimneys swept before you decide to use them for a fire.

Thank you Sonia.

I'll get a gas engineer and perhaps ask for a Gas Tray Fire as it seems more convenient. would you agree?

Is your fire place already painted and you're trying to figure out just what that paint color is? If this is the case there are several ways to do this. First if you have a good eye for color, you can get a number of multi-shade paint cards and try to match it. Another method and one I prefer is to take a small flake (about the size of a quarter) of the paint to a good paint store and have it scanned matched.

I think the room could be much more elegant if you dry walled the end of the pony wall up to the ceiling which would give you a more centered fireplace which could then turn into a focal point with a proper mantel. Right now the set-up looks sort of busy and odd, especially with all the books in the built-in. If you chose to do that I would get rid of the bookcase. If you want to keep the current set up, beefing up the wood on the mantel as Scott Design suggested would be an inexpensive way to improve its appearance. I would also remove the books and put in a few art objects in the bookcase.

Agree with Judith too, paint all one colour as back wall. I like the fireplae and wouldn't replace it. That mirror it too big and not very interesting, doesn't do anything for the wall or the fireplace. The gold I suspect clashes with the metal on the surround, bit too new and shiny. I think a great piece of artwork would really set off the fireplace and make it a gorgeous focal point. As the fireplace is very angular I suggest a more organic colourful piece to soften it up a bit. A real painting rather than a print if you can. Keep an eye out at markets, second hand stores ... or even eBay!
