Covering up ceiling tiles?

Hello! We live in a 1950's cape in massachusetts. In the 1970's the previous owner did a 3 room addition and used glue on ceiling tiles (not asbestos) instead of drywall ceilings. See the picture attached.

Any ideas on how I could cover it up? I'd like it to be just a typical, white looking smooth or slightly textured ceiling. I was thinking about the thick wallpaper that you use to cover up paneling. Any thoughts would be helpful! Thanks so much!

Just drywall right on top and finish however you like.

I have same problem. Cabinets to ceiling so no space for drywall. Other suggestions?

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style.

Hi @mjdpower, My suggestion is to go to a couple of floor specialist and ask as they may come up with something different. Whatever you do keep in consideration the size of the room and think on a long term: a poor quality finish could effect your property price in a space as important as the kitchen. I will try something that allow you to go back to your original tiles floor if things do not work out the way you want them to go. A cheap way is to cover the tiles with vinyl and here is how to do it: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-install-vinyl-flooring-over-ceramic-tiling#b the adhesive should not stain or damage the tiles (ask the manufacture before doing it anyway!) and you have a large choice of design and colours. Paint tiles could be another option, not my favourite but an option. I found this blog where Curry Kay describe step by step how she's did it. We took hours and hours to remove all of the ceiling tile in our main level . Ours were stapled on and I had to pull staples for days. Are yo sure they are glued. I did however leave them in one bedroom that I use as an office and just painted them in there they really don’t look bad.The only other way is to drywall over top
