I am so overwhelmed - whole room needs help
My living room needs help. We just built this beautiful home that I love and this is the front room where various bits of furniture have come to rest. The only things that need to stay are the rug and the sofa. The art (I will take pic) is an original that I love.
I need new chairs (these I think are too small) new tables (coffee and side) curtains and rods (have installed the functional blinds now need to add the pretty) lamps can go etc etc.
If it’s helpful the entry and office (next rooms) have a navy thing going on and the dining room next to it needs help too but let’s stick here for now so I don’t start whimpering ok?! Lol I’m totally comfortable in the garden but when it comes to indoor decorating I look and look and then give up and we don’t have pictures or do anything for five years.
Please take pity on me and help.
My sister called my style “Nordic minimalist” today and she was only half joking.

4 years agofirst what is the purpose of the room? TV watching? Because right now everything in the room is geared to a more formal look than TV watching. Personally I don't like the TV on your beautiful FP but there are no walls to put it on. The floor lamp needs to go at the FP end of the sofa currently it's just lighting the floor.

Comments (19)That wall paper doesn't go at all.. and you don't need wallpapers.. how about a cream shade on the fireplace part of wall with oxblood coloured (from your curtain flowers) horizontal band below mantel, while the rest of the walls be lilac? Ever considered stoenwork similar to your fireplace on that wall? Also lower the hung photographs.. should be at least four inches below the windows' top edge.. Your sofas are quite dark. they seem aubergine.. is there any way you can at least place one of the sofas across from a window so that light falls on it? right now it is in the shadows backed against the windows, therefore more dark (does it seem so when you're in the room too?) The mirror (though nice) is too solid and thick for the mantel. can it go on a clearer stretch of some wall? fourth wall? What is the fourth wall like? idk how the fourth wall is like but how about angling large sofa at 90 degrees to the window with the single seater also angled in the corner where the lamp is.. and place the side table with lamp infront of the window (i-e at the corner of the 'L' made by t he sofas).. If possible get lighter lamp shades (cream).. Love the cushions.. place two of these cushions on the single seater to relieve the large sofa.. Please turn the rug lengthwise along the length of the sofa.. get a glass/metal table (if tots allow) or cream ottomon as center table.. The TV is too large for the rack, no? The vase is being wasted under the tv.. Florals and stripes can be mixed depending on print.. but if you bring anymore florals in this room, it would be best to match the flower shape to those in the curtains. Comments (33)If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. If you're open to big changes, especially if you plan on replacing the fireplace, you could install a lower mantle, and install the TV above it on a swing arm. This way, the TV and fireplace will remain the focus in the centre of the room, while still being able to view the TV wherever you deem most comfortable on any given day. I think the oblong shape of the room would allow for a couple different seating arrangements. Looking at the second image (fireplace on the right), imagine a compact love seat with it's back facing the double doors. Across from the love seat, 2 accent chairs, backs facing the photographer. Add a coffee table of your choice, and you now have a conversation space in front of the fireplace that is also ideal for watching TV. Thinking about the space behind the love seat, closest to the double doors; a half-height, full-width bookshelf would be lovely along the right wall (left of the fireplace), or even a cushioned bench seat with storage underneath, or both! One orientation to the right of the fireplace, and one to the left. Behind the love seat you could place a console table with lamps and accent decor that would create a visual division, making each seating area seem more intimate and purposeful. Comments (1)Light olive & Dark aubergine combo works well, it fits the contemporary classic style you are suggesting and are natural colours that would suit a room with a lot of window and light. You can still use one of the trending tones (a stone / grey colour) as a secondary colour. Congrats on your new home. It's lovely. Creating your own space can be super daunting. You want it to be beautiful and reflect a bit of your own style. But there are so many options...what to do? Let's see if I can help.
You have a lovely rug and sofa, which are both in a light tone. Nordic Minimalist spaces tends to have light natural tones with touches of warm textures to create a cozy, but uncluttered space. So you are definitely on the right track.
At the moment, the space feels more like a formal sitting room with how the furniture is placed and the TV being so high up. Should you wish to keep it as a TV room, I would suggest firstly to rotate the sofa so it faces the TV and add lovely lounge chair or two on the side. For the coffee table, I would think about using a table in light wood. Curtains is a great idea. I would generally suggest a sheer that goes from floor to ceiling. It would give your space more height and improve the quality of light into the space.
As the TV is in such a central location and the first thing you see when you come in, you could also consider swapping it for one that looks like a painting when it is off. https://www.samsung.com/uk/tvs/the-frame/highlights/

You could consider using a console/bookcase to hide the back of the sofa and to add a bit of character to the space. Do add plants to the space as it will also add to a general feeling of lightness and nature.
