Carpet for stairs.
Comments (12)Thanks all very much for your comments. I just looked at your link carolins for striped carpets, they are all fab but are ALL vertical. Has anyone ever seen horizontal ones? It would be a very expensive mistake to make if it didn't work out, especially here in Ireland as all home decor items are overpriced. Need to paint the dark stairwell too, no bannisters, just wall. Would love to be adventurous with colour but always seem to stick with the 'safe' neutral options....See MorePainting stairs, what to do with skirting/ architrave / doors

Comments (5)I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!...See MoreHow to stain stair banister+ type of stain?Advice please
Comments (1)I want to stain the front newel and banister and then i am painting the spindles white. All i want to to darken it a bit but to create a nicer contrast but not too dark. I am just unsure how to stain the banister or what product to use?? I was in woodies and they advised me to use the Ronseal interior Varnish that is a 2 in 1 stain,So i was thinking maybe a dark oak maybe has anyone used this? Or should i use a separate stain amd then clear varnish??? Do i need to pre-stain the wood with a conditioner?? I have sanded it back with 80 sandpaper. I plan to use BIN primer on spindles and then satin finish, to avoid sanding each one. Any advice appreciated, as im a bit of a novice!!!...See MoreEllie
