Dining Rooms Design Dilemma

Dining Area Help

Hi all,

I am hoping that somebody may be able to help me. I am trying to find the best place to put our dining table. At the moment it is located in the breakfast room but it is all a bit cramped. We have a small round table - about 115cm wide but we want to seat 4 people around it easily. I am toying with several ideas as follows - (1) to extend the kitchen out maybe 2 or 3 metres and move the table in there; (2) to put double doors between the kitchen and living room and use the area near the garden door for the dining table and then have living room seating at the fireplace end; (3) converting half of the garage so that the utility room can be moved forward and the utility room then incorporated into the kitchen making it hopefully big enough for a dining area? What does everyone think? The budget is tight - I have about £40k to make the necessary changes!

In case you’re wondering, the current room marked as dining room is now being used as a playroom but could also change that to the living room if that may help?

I have two boys aged 6 and 2 so we definitely need an area for them. I have been struggling with this for awhile and so any help/suggestions would be massively appreciated!!

Hi, I think I've had the same idea as Daisy. Obviously depending on which are loadbaring walls and whether it would be possible to put in steels, but this is how it would/could look.

I find it strange that dining rooms are planned at the front of the house making them a more formal affair. My sister has this design and never uses it. Who wants to traipse down a corridor with plates of food?

If that were my house and I wasn’t looking for something on a tight budget I would have the kitchen all the way across the back of the house to also include the dining area and put the lounge at the front. Therefore your existing dining room could be extended into the existing sitting room making it level with the existing breakfast room. One big sociable area. Only 2 rooms: lounge and kitchen.

The kitchen area would then also be big enough for the boys to have seating/PC area.

I can never see the point in having lots of small rooms when one big open space would work out better.

Hello. We have an open plan kitchen/living/dining room and have really struggled to find the right place for our dining table. The showhouses had a small dining table in the centre of the room and a sideboard in the alcove. However a 6-seater looks huge in the centre and breaks the flow of the room. We are considering extending the kitchen onto the patio to create a dining room but until that happens I’d love to hear some suggestions!

Forgot to mention that I made the utility a bit smaller, so the kitchen could be a big bigger.

Think an architect could help you get the most out of the space or help you to decide whether you should extend or not.
