dark paint on stair case? what colour on walls?

Hi, I am having a dilemma as I cannot decide which colour to use in the hallway. The decorator starts on Monday and I have to choose the paint colour by tomorrow .. I have spent ages looking but I can’t decide. I am also wondering if I should paint the stair case dark grey ... I will attach some pictures of my hallway now and some ideas I have seen. Please help!!

Wow those tiles are stunning! That gives us a completely different ball game. I agree with Beano to go for white walls, then all the attention will be on those gorgeous tiles. White woodwork too, although the dark stairs will still look good. Nice and simple.

I think the dark grey will look great, just make sure you buy a dark 'warm' grey to match in with the dark wood on the floor. The wall paint you could go with an off 'warm' white.

Unfortunately the only way to choose a paint properly is to get testers made up in a range of shades that might work, take them home and see how they look in situ.

All paint will look different inside the home to that in store and definitely on line.

This has been quite a common dilemma on Houzz and there are several posts about it which may be worth searching for. I agree a dark staircase would look great and a popular colour choice is F&B Downpipe, but there are so many lovely dark shades out there. For the walls how about something like F&B Skimming Stone or Dulux Egyptian Cotton? I agree about getting match pots because a colour is influenced by the light in the room and colours change according to the light.

I would pick my flooring first. Then I would paint the walls. Then have a look at the room and see how you like it before you paint the cupboards or the brick. Do it in steps because I think your brick could look quite nice and I like your cupboards the way they are. Just don't jump too fast painting things that you can't reverse. It may be that you will still want to paint the brick and cupboards but better to see how things look before you do. You have a lovely space !

I'm looking for advise on what colour to choose in my open plan kitchen/dining, living space. Ideally I'd like to have the kitchen/dining area in a different colour to the main living area. The kitchen is contemporary, white units and white worktop with metallic grey on appliances. I would like to paint the kitchen/dining walls grey but I don't want it too dark for the room and then have a paint colour for the living area that would suit/fit well with grey painted walls. I agree with forza! I live a grey but it’s nearly as if it’s the default, there are so many other colours out there to choose from esp taking into account the period of your home!

Tbh I’d tend to go white with your hall with respect if it’s size and the dark floor, you could paint the banister and spindles and have a lovely stair runner and retainer bars at the rear of each tread!

The colour on these walls here is brilliant white but as you have said earlier I feel a warmer white would be better. What r your thoughts please. Should I just stick to white woodwork? It’s a big change to correct if I don’t like it once it’s done

I’ve seen that before, very popular, I think it would look very well in your hall, I also like the colour of the wood floor and herringbone style it’s laid in your original pic!

If I was going with this tile I would tend to go brilliant white, matte on walls and high gloss on the woodwork ( even though I like satin wood you home looks period and I love gloss in a period home)

A bark runner will help continue the strong floor up the stairs if all is painted white.

Antique brass or pewter carpet bars would look really well, not cheap but boy do they look good!

I’d accessorise with a gallery wall and pics up the stair wall, and a couple of large plants too

Have you thought of plain glass above the door and a frosted number? Give you some more light.

The image you have posted of the tiles with the dark woodwork looks cold to me, probably due to the white walls. I think that look can work if the space is really really light, bit if not, that pure white could look austere. Are you sensitive to how a room feels in terms of temperature, that is what I would ask and if the answer is yes then consider softer taupes instead of pure whites.

Great pic :-) was actually just about to say paint the back of the door dark grey as it will be a great feature! That’s what I did my my home with an all white hall, looks fantastic

I'm a bit confused (easily done). Are you definitely changing the floor or not? I have read that the 'fixed' elements in a room are the boss and I think this is good advice. Do you really want patterned tiles or those particular patterned tiles? If it's those and you are certainly having them, then they will dictate the colours in the hall to a certain extent. If you are having those, then the background colour and temperature will determine what type of neutral or white you have. If they are a cool white then warm white walls may not look right and vice versa.

It's interesting the mention of Insta. We were talking about this the other day - what looks good on a tiny square does not necessarily translate to real life. Things need to have impact on a small square to draw the eye, but in real life you need to live in a space and feel comfortable. I think we have all been sucked in at times! Anyway, Forza's previous mention about Skimming Stone is a good one. Greys tend to be blue based, green based or violet based. Blue based can look urban and tend towards cool, green based or violet based may be the way to go. Little Greene Slaked Lime is good, Skimming Stone woodwork, Elephants Breath walls Farrow and Ball etc.

Is to small and dark for all that dark grey woodwork. What about this with skimming stone walls. Just grey on the bannister and keep the panelling below a nice shade of farrow and ball white?

Skimming stone woodwork and elephants breath walls was a colour I had from the beginning. I love that colour! Think I will go with that xx
