desperate need of a revamp

In a bid to save money I’m wondering if I should try and reuse the tiles in a different way, assuming they come off clean. Is this a good idea? I hate how they are half tiled right around the bathroom. I don’t mind the shower tiled as is.

I want to replace flooring, get a cupboard installed on the boiler instead of the curtain.

Happy to also replace suite although not essential except maybe shower. Can’t afford to have anything relocated.

One issue is that flooring goes all the way through including under the shower so not sure if the whole lot needs replacing or we can cut around shower etc.

Will I save money if I remove tiles/flooring myself and get someone to reinstall? Or just let them do the lot?

If you like the tiles just not the way they're hung you could just paint the walls a similar colour or choose a colour that has less contrast? Or choose a wallpaper and then use matt decorators varnish to seal it. The floor looks fine but you could warm it with a wooden stool, duck board, bamboo mat, washable rug etc. If you want to change it, it may possibly be an option to lay a luxury vinyl tile over the tiles. The tile and self levellling compound is very thin so it may be ok. I had someone look at mine a while back but my bath, vanity etc are on feet. If you get someone in I'd just ask how they finish around the edges. If you want to change them I'd get a pro in to do the whole job personally

I don’t understand how you want to change it- is it just that you need additional tiles for part of the bathroom? If so can you still get them?

To my eyes and as far I can tell from the small pan photo, your bathroom looks pretty good!

You can leave the handrail the same distance from the wall as it is now. Leave it connected to the newel post at the top; remove the newel post at the bottom, and add what's called a 'return' to anchor the bottom end to the wall. Then add a couple of brackets going up the stairs. The challenge is that the return should match the profile of the handrail, in order to blend, but check at the home center or a lumber yard/mill to see if you can match it (take measurements/drawings/close-up photos, etc.). As for painting the stairs--be careful with "fun" graphics. The treads and risers need to be clearly defined and regular. For example, a plaid or check that doesn't match the tread and riser exactly at each step is a trip hazard and may not meet building codes. People need to be able to see the treads clearly even without paying attention to them. Walking is an unconscious activity and we need to make it as easy as possible. Confusing patterns are a menace. In NYC, they put new edges on treads on one stairway at one train station that were designed to make them less slippery. However, they also made it more difficult to discern the edge of the tread. In 6 weeks, more than 1,400 people fell down those stairs. Then they redid them. Over 90% of injuries on stairs happen during descent. I highly recommend Bill Bryson's great book 'At Home--A Short History of Private Life'. The NYC anecdote above came from Chapter 14--'The Stairs'. Fascinating and amusing book. My house is 100 years old, so I feel your pain dealing with the changes and additions that happened over time.

Your house is very attractive but a little TLC is required. If possible depending on budget limitations, I would do the following to soften the edges and add a manicured, polished yet homely feeling to the house: Area needing attention: Front door and surrounds Issue: Lack of a focal point, has no presence and appears to recess into the house • Remove all potted plants from outside the front door • Remove the seat from under the main window • Rent/borrow a water power washer to clear away the moss/weeds • Paint the front door (if wood) a dolphin grey colour and add a door wreath (radiates warmth) • Purchase 2 potted Bay trees (Laurus Nobilis) to be placed either side of the newly painted front door to frame the doorway • Put up a postbox on the wall to the right of the front door • Add 2 external candle lanterns to enhance the ambience for house viewings

Need help for exterior re-vamp please!

Hello everyone, First time poster here - heard great reviews of the advice on this site! So here goes - My house is overdue a total exterior re-paint. I'm quite happy with the white - not so sure about the grey trim and 100% want to change the colour of the door that is a drab dark brown at the minute. The window frames can not be painted as they are PVC. I'm liking the idea of a Juniper / aubergine coloured door? But what to colour the wooden sides and trim around the door? Would really appreciate your advice - i'm based in the west of Ireland so lots of rain and green! I've attached a photo - hope the quality is sufficient... Thanks in advance, Yvonne

Lovely bathroom, at least the bit I can see from the weird squashed photo. I doubt any of those tiles will come off clean, tile adhesive is pretty strong. By all means change it, but does it really need it?

So are you saying you want to remove all of the tiles, except for the tiles in the shower? What about behind the bath / sink? You’d prob need something as a kind of splash back.

I've just looked at today's Houzz stories and this one jumped out although it's the opposite way round for walls and floors. This has been really warmed with the wood cupboard, the tasseled rug, hammam towels, plants in jute baskets and I quite like the mural. Anyway just thought I'd add the pics :)

I really like your ideas minnie and very grateful - i was thinking of changing the pedastal sink to a vanity unit, get rid of the mirror cupboard with a flat mirror and i really like your wallpaper suggestion! I think it looks wicked! I'm wondering if i can find a wooden vanity unit to warm it up

The flooring is my biggest problem now, the toilet shower and basin all sit on top of it.

Tiles don't come off clean, most of them break during the removing part.

You could paint over them or go tile over tile if you want to save money while changing a bit.

I agree with some of the comments above, the bathroom looks pretty good, maybe a darker colour paint above the matches or compliments your tiles would look great.

Its very difficult to remove tiles as the don't all come off in one piece. Alternatively you could remove the bath, w/c basin ect and re tile the bathroom and just refit your originally sanitary ware, it would be more expensive to do this but may give you the look you're after.

I am going to try and work with the tiles thanks to the advice on here.

I am definately going to replace the floor because I hate it! I have been putting together this idea.

What do people think?

I think I prefer it as it is.
The one thing I’m not keen on is the bath - I don’t like plastic panels on the sides as I think it cheapens the look. You said that the floor tiles are running underneath fittings - so could you either replace the side panel or replace the whole bath with a freestanding one?
I like the vanity unit idea - but I think a solid colour is better than a fake wood look...

Do you have some kind of budget in mind? This might help us to make more appropriate suggestions- ie £500 then you’re talking paint and decorations, £1000 might get you the vanity combo or swap the bath, whole room is probably nearing £10k...

Budget around 1k

I think free standing bath is not feasible due to existing plumbing.

The floor is by far the biggest issue, you can’t see from the pics but it’s damaged.

With labour and materials, you will probably find that new tiles for the floor will be around £1k (unless you know someone who will do mates rates!).
If the floor is damaged, then that should be the priority - perhaps leave everything else as it looks ok for now... (I’d still swap the bath panel though).
If the floor is level, you might be able to tile over existing tiles - that will save ripping everything out. I think your best bet now is to get a couple of decent tilers in to have a look - they will soon be able to tell you what is best.

Very nice cupboard looks like a job well done. On a note of caution make sure that your carbon monoxide alarm is in a good area to detect any possible leak.

The carpenter did a fantastic job, it was a long 13 hr day but worth it! I’ve completed 3 coats of undercoat, going to finish with 2 coats of white satin

Thanks! Need to tackle ceiling and walls next and then replace the floor. I’m holding out on the vanity Unit cos I may end up being happy once everything is fresh.

Tbh, I quite liked the colour of the cupboard in your previous photos also. Seemed to add some interest and warmth.
