Front garden inspiration

Would really appreciate some inspiration for our front garden which has been left whilst we focused on the back garden and inside the house. The tarmac drive way and unusual footprint is a legacy of the previous owners and not something I like. I would like to retain a garden of some sorts and the beautiful acers. There is also a large tree stump between the acers which has large roots and seems impossible to move without disrupting the other trees. The garden is a sun trap with the hydrangea and azalea doing really well. My vision is lacking but I would like something more defined and in keeping with the house. The budget does not currently allow for removing the tarmac drive however ideas for when it does are welcomed. Thank you.

I think you could shape some box plants into different size shapes and plant some colourful tall perennials in between which would flower throughout the year: tulips, wild gladioli, allium, echinops, verbena, cosmos etc. It would look Really nice.

Oh wow. I am just growing some cosmos and love your suggestions. I am half thinking now of getting rid of the lawn and adding in some stone like in the first picture you suggested. Thank you for your comment it has helped.

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

It depends what your into. I was chairman of an allotment and I obviously love veg. You can have both in front garden and they look great are easy to maintain and you get popular with the neighbours. You can fix this really easily and quite cheaply with a a bit of planning and digging. You need to widen your boarders. So many people are scared of making the boarders wiser but they make a big difference. Male curved on the edges and being the border out by 30cm at very minimum. Get some larger shrubs of shrubs that will get larger for the back of the boarder against the neighbouring fence. Space them well, it’s cheaper, will look neat and give it a year or two you’ll have quite a deep backdrop. I’d put the palm tile ones then further forward. Along the drove I would make a new boarders and add a rosemary hedge. Rosemary is fab and I’m always nipping out my garden to grab a handful. Also the top corner by the house of add a rhubarb. I became so popular with the neighbours! They even peak over to see if it’s nearly ready to start picking.

Growing some edibles in a front garden sounds like a lovely idea.

I also agree with Sarah not to skimp on borders (and planting).

Personally I would probably not make it *too* formal, but that’s just a question of personal taste really.

You have a lovely front garden space. Please keep us posted :)

Love edible plants and the back garden is well stocked. I had never thought about the fruit and really love the idea of rosemary hedge. The borders in the back are wide but I have been cautious in the front to avoid the grass being too small and meaningless but you are both very right, I need to be braver! Thank you.

Some wooden or metal planters either side of your doorway would help to make a statement at the entrance
