Border hedge advice
We have a shared drive with an over grown garden. We are getting it cleared professionally but I'm after some advice on how to create a clear divide to stop our neighbours looking into our living room. if we were to erect a fence it would be 5 to 6ft high which I think would be too over powering. could anyone recommend some ornamental ever green trees or shrubs I could plant instead? I was thinking ornamental pear trees but they look to grow quite high. many thanks

5 years agoPhotinia Red Robin..............great Evergreen shrub / bush. Lovely red leaves on the new growth which then turn green. You can buy these as larger or smaller shrubs depending on your budget.
Pear Trees won't work, for one thing they're not evergreen and another it's a tree. Don't be fooled by this 'patio / dwarf' variety, all poppycock, they will reach their normal height if not constantly pruned. We keep all of our fruit trees to around 9 feet, but that's too high for outside a lounge window.
We have our Photinias planted for privacy reasons, but we've got them as standard plants. Therefore, the light comes in over and under the head of the plant, but the head is around 5 feet high and stops people seeing directly in.
This is exactly what ours look like except this is in a pot and ours are in the ground. I would have gone outside and taken pics ( maybe later ), but it's tipping it down again!

Comments (36)I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Comments (4)May I suggest since you are going to be weed fighting for a time, that you cut a curving path or track to place dg over gravel on with a border, and rake in native wildflower seed after the next rain - see if you have a native plant society and phone to ask who is the commercial restoration seed supplier in your region ( it will be lovely things like lupine, lacy whites, ) They will have a stock mix for your area and that will bring you some simple loveliness whilst you determine more long term goals . .. the larger elements provide some nice shelter and enclosure here . . . possible you would want to go up the slope to where you've a nice view and make a larger area (again, using edge or pavers for edge, put down gravel then decomposed granite or chip seal (local term here, sorry) - something that will drain and provide a destination for a short ramble eventually, you might plant a garden along the way from here to there .. . don't tear anything out that is established . . as with trimming it will give you a mix of sizes so you can layer in the garden...See MoreSiobhan

Comments (25)Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that.
