One or two panels

I finally found curtain panels I liked . I ordered 6 4 for large window 2 for smaller side window. They are very heavy once I put up the 2 on one side of the window I feel it looks bunched. Of course I need to get them hemed but don think that will change much. Could I get away with one on each side. They will never be closed to cover the whole window. I just can not decide!

The curtains look great-but scrunch them together. The extra panels are meant to give proportional fullness to either side of the window but not to cover more window. See above I have 3 panels on each side for a bank of 3 windows. I think white fabric roller or Roman shades would look amazing :)

Looks nice Stacy. I can’t see the rings on the right hand side though. You may have to adjust the pins up so the drapes drop a bit!

Hi Marie. It's difficult to tell how wide the room is but a round table could work at the foot of the stairs. Dress with a large bowl and plants/flowers etc. you could also try hanging 3 chandeliers or pendants down the hall. I would also have either 2 matching consoles opposite each other by the front door or keep your existing and add some seating opposite to create symmetry. I think if you were to dress the console with bigger items it would stand out more ie ginger jars on the bottom shelf, classic urns, plants etc on the top. Once you've got the basics done and budget permits, you can add further floor standing decorative pieces, a small chair etc. I think you definitely need some tall art by the front door though or even mirrors if you're not keen to add art

Lyn I hope you mean the 2 panels all the way to the right cause they are not done. I don t think I can have them drop any more the point will come through the top. Maybe there is a little room I will check. I actually went to the guy I use to hem and he is leaving for vacation and will not be back till feb 15! Just my luck. I am checking with a few others and did not leave with him. Greenfish I ended up getting hooks from bed bath and beyond the ones I ordered from amazon were not prime and wouldn’t be here till February so I canceled those. I can take a pic. They had two sizes I got both but used the heavy duty ones. They stay put almost like they were made with curtains! Amazing I will post a few pics

BTW it was Flo and some others who taught me about the # of panel rule. Pull one of the panels way to the other side and snap a pic of you want to show others how relatively skimpy and lame it looks with just one. I would have done just one without her guidance and I am SO glad I didn't!

Yea I learned that panel rule 20 years ago when I got a great deal on linen panels from restoration hardware when we first moved in lol I only bought 4 ! I took them to get hemmed and realized I needed more. I called every store possible for more no one had them. I was stuck with skimpy panels for years till I could afford to buy new!!! Ugggg that pattern threw we for a loop. So glad u guys made me realize!!! I do have a smidge room left to move the pins so a bit more shows of the rings so I will do it I would like to see a bit more. I have some time to play since I have no one to hem them at the moment I am on the look for someone!

Yes Stacy, it would be nice to see more of the rings! You have more rooms to play with there so give it a go! It’s good you bought the extra long hooks too, they will add stability and keep the header from flopping. I think when using a large pattern on drapes one is inclined to want to spread them out to see the pattern as you first had them. Using the two panels and stacking them back properly actually creates its own pattern. Here are my drapes in my family room; they do have pleats but are on a rod with ring also. You don’t see the pins so do adjust yours.

Btw, yours don’t need to come down as far as mine. I realize your hooks are long and you have less room! Just get as close as possible.

Also, one last thing ; and I don’t mean to pick! You need to take the last ring and put it on the other side of the outside bracket! The bracket should not show! It’s a small detail , I know;)!

That’s what I meant by “return”. It doesn’t look like your rod has hole for return hook. Here’s a trick on that. You can screw a eyelet hook on the wall to put a return hook in. Just to close gap to wall.

There isn’t a hole on those for a return Flo. As long as you put the ring on the outside of the bracket the fold should turn back towards the wall . The bracket isn’t very deep here; I think it will be fine.

It is on mine but then again I have pleats. I always do a return when using a traverse rod though. In this case you can see how it looks . Usually the last pin is left to put in hole on the side. It wraps around “ the return “ .

If there isn’t anywhere to put the hook you can screw a little eye hook like Flo posted either into the wall or into the wall bracket.

I don’t have a return on my heavy drapes but I do on the white ones. If you press these well and turn the pleat back toward the wall you may not need the return.

Yea, i like the traverse rods because they make it easy to do a clean return. Great examples lynartist. Your drapery is beautiful.

extending your rod outside the frame of the window anywhere from 6" to even 15" is acceptable as you have done and I do agree with you that two panels do look quite heavy or bulky... I think I would just use 1 panel per side

....and my hunch is you already know that your room isn't weighty furniture wise so having 2 panels per side will most likely cause a weight inbalance

Love your drapes Lyn! Yes I can do the ring trick I have been playing today. Was able to move pin up a bit just to the point it doesn’t poke out the top. That’s as good as it’s gonna get I can deal. would like more ring but not gonna sacrifice the stability. Going to have seamstress remove those top tabs I feel they are going to get in the way of near perfect pleating. Very hard to play with having xtra length on them but I like what I see. Waiting for some call backs from a few seamstresses to see when I can get them to her.

Good idea to remove tabs Stacy! I’m sure the rings will be fine. By the time you are done these will look like custom drapes! It’s all the small details, the pressing and the laying of the pleats that makes the difference! Taking the time to fuss over those details makes it all worth it!

Do u believe I am still waiting to get these curtains back! I went to a girl who came highly recommend at first I thought she only charged 10 dollars per layer I have 6 with 2 layers. We talked about removing the tabs which she said would be easy an fast and told me her hourly for that was 35 dollars and shouldn’t be more than an hour. Well when I went to drop off apparently on top of her per layer fee she charges 35 and hour at approximately 3 hours So ok I drove 40 min I was there let’s get this done. She was very nice and told me about a week that was 2 weeks ago and now I don’t expect them for another week. So I should have waited for my guy to get back from Aruba on the 15 th and do them for approximately 15 a panel ! Lol just my luck I guess. What is the average any of you have paid am I just spoiled!? These 6 panels that only cost 60 a piece are now costing me 200 for tailoring. I do love them. All I wanted was to buy a few new throw pillows! I bought a 400 dollar ottoman and I have 600 in cellular blinds on the way. How does this happen? The worst part is my neighbors can see my every move I have been without anything for 2 full weeks! Ready to explode! Thanks for listening to me vent!

As long as the job is perfect I don’t think it’s a bad price! You will end up with what will essentially be custom drapes for a fraction of the cost and they will look fabulous! There is no substitute for good detail work! Taking $60. Drapes and making them look like $1200. Drapes takes a bit of $$ and aggravation! It will be worth it in the end!

Thank you I needed that ! Just frustrated about time it’s taking. She said a week then the following week then once again the following. Apparently she works for a big company and she thought she wasn’t busy when she quoted time frame. She did offer to drop to me for return thank god and she is spacing all of my pins exactly where they should be ! My work was slightly off hehe!

What about hanging some flat sheets up with curtain clips until you get the drapes back? Maybe you wouldn't feel as exposed?

I recently put some curtains up and learned a lot about measuring and hanging. I used brass rod and rings and these simple hooks

The window, including the casing, is 38" wide so I made the rod 48" long so that the curtains can be drawn to show the full window and I have 2 x 48" wide panels that I gathered to be 26" wide at the top.

You can probably find it a bit cheaper if you go to a metal supply store, but I bought some of the mounting brackets too so just bought it together. For the brass rings I used these

but the hanging hole is quite small so I had to use the curtain hooks I linked to above.
