Make my room more impressive
Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!...See MoreSitting room
Comments (30)Hello the days are brightening up by now and I'm sure the room is looking less drab for it. However I think furniture rearranging will work wonders. You seem to have nice low window sills: show them off. If the sofa goes to the left between window and built-in unit you'll have a view out to the garden and more light in the room. Equally: can you fit the piano between the radiator and the double doors? Again: more light through the window. Low sills are a god-send, and so many of us are stuck with high ones. The room will feel more spacious with a good view to outdoors. The armchairs then: one to the left of the fireplace and one between the other window and piano. TV then between the two windows. (No shine on the screen) Does that fit maybe? Or do you need all five seats facing the TV? I rather like those stripy cushions. Can you find a striped wallpaper in matching colors and with an irregular pattern repeat for your accent wall? if going with wood floors how about a sheepskin rug for each of your doggies? Black or white. One last detail. A lower table for your side lamps would be good: At sofa arm or seat height. Coffee table could work in corner between window and new sofa position. Btw: I liked the suggestion to replace the cupboard doors above the fish tank with full-height ones. In some kitchen shops you can find ready-painted, wooden, panel doors that might fit. It's a long shot but you could be lucky. It would brighten up the corner if you got a light colour....See Moreliving room in need of makeover!! please help!!
Comments (17)You can paint the inside of FP opening charcoal and then I would go for a blue/grey and not greige. Those colors tend to be very dark. You have black furnishings and a blue/grey would look very fresh. Your art above FP has blue in it, so replace rug and get some pillows for sofa that will bring in the colors of the painting. Why not just put in some shelves, one big enough to hold tv. That would give a more open concept to room. If you need one enclosed to store components, that would fit also. I would not build up too high on the wall....See MoreTo hang or not to hang pictures ??
Comments (33)I would move the sofa to the opposite side of the room (providing there is not a door on that side, cannot see but a small over lap wouldn't hurt) move the armchair at far end of room near to the fireplace at a slight angle, either toward the fire if not watching tv or the other way if something good on the telly x. (everyone can enjoy the fire then). Move the TV from the corner beside the fireplace to the corner where the smaller arm chair sits at present in the photo. Then less focus on TV and more focus on your gorgeous fire place, but TV still accessible to watch. This would then free space either side of fireplace to hang pictures. if you enjoy your art work hang it, it makes your home your own. I would place similar themed pictures of the same size just below the level of the top of the lintel so the eye focuses on this strong line first, at the same height on either side of the fireplace. Follow this top line of frames around the wall and hang other pictures on the walls between the windows on each side of room (behind sofa in new position) The TV unit is quite large, perhaps painting it in a very slightly darker shade than you walls will detract attention but only if this is not a well loved piece of furniture. An oversize (or largeish) footstool in the middle of the room to put your feet on when watching the fire and double up as a coffee table with a beautiful large tray left on top to put your coffee on, flowers or a small collection of books. If large enough the person in the armchair could put their feet up too. Just an idea. No idea of you view outside or where your power points are. If you want to further soften the room contemporary pelmets above your blinds would be nice in the same fabric and picture lights above your pictures create lovely ambient lighting glow. lovely room though...See MoreGoWallpaper.co.uk
