help with splash back

I need some help with my splash back/wall. We’ve just finished an entire house renovation and I have completely run out of decision making power. I’ve got to the point I’m not even sure what I like anymore!
Kitchen is very white with a pale grey floor. I’d like something exciting or interesting as a splash-back to draw the eye and make the kitchen a bit more interesting. I quite like these blue and white tiles- but would they look awful across the whole wall? Also quite like the idea of going very dark blue or indigo. Not adverse to a shelf or two. Or antique mirror (hubby not keen). I basically need help as I have no idea!
The rest of the room is a work in process. Table staying but sofa going. Nothing on walls yet as it’s all still in storage.
Thank you!

We used mirror - have a similar layout to you. I like your tile choice though!
That looks good with the mirror. Does it mark easily with splashes from the hob? Very similar layout!
I'd just have a splashback behind the hob and then an upstand all round. Might opt for glass. A nice bright colour? Orange?
I like the tile choice you showed! Will really pop in the space!
definitely no vintage mirror. love the tile you like. Kitchen is all very white so definitely brighten it up. maybe some nice mosaic tiles with splash of green or orange
  • 8 years ago
I don't find it marks too badly at all - only when my husband's been frying things! Ideally we wouldn't have had an upstand on that section with it but thought it would have looked odd for the mirrored wall to meet the upstand wall round the corner so we had the upstand all the way round. Good luck with your choice!
Just realised you have the upstand all the way round too and although a lot of advice seems to be that a splashback looks better all the way down to the worktop, I think it looks fine sitting above the upstand. It also hid a slightly wonky wall at the join with the worktop which I don't think a thinner splashback would have done!

Although I'm not a tile person and prefer a splashbacks, I think a patterned tile will look lovely in your kitchen.

I do like the tile you've selected; my only worry is the *possible* starkness if the room is north or East facing, in which case softer/warmer colours would work well. if the room is south facing it would lovely. That's my personal view but I'm sure the experts could add to this.

Your kitchen looks very similar to one I have seen on a home renovation instagram page; they've useeln marble effect hexagonal tiles, which look lovely; I'll attach on image below, maybe you could draw Inspiration from it.

Hi, I love your kitchen! we have not long completed our kitchen- not dissimilar to yours.

All white, white units white corian worktops, all White Island. We went for warm wood floors.

I spent weeks and weeks agonising over splashbacks - love the mirrored ones but wasn’t sure if the glam aspect clashed with our matt white and scandi style, looked at plain glass splashback or coloured splashback but again wasn’t sure if the glass finish went with our style. I finally gave up and desperate to cover the plastered area I painted it very light matt grey (accent colour in rest of room too) I then used decorators varnish in flat matt to seal it. Our sink is in front of this area and splashes, cooking spills clean up so easily that what was intended as a temporary measure I now love and am keeping, cost me about £20 to do.

My point is that it is another option to consider. Someone has mentioned marble already and I think some marble effect tiles would look amazing there - could really see that looking fantastic.

Good look with your search x

I don’t have any tile suggestions but feel your pain regarding having run out of decision making capacity. We’re in the same boat and I’m at the stage I just tell my builder to decide.
Thank you everyone for your feedback. Marble is an interesting idea. I’m also pleased the tiles I like are quite popular with you all. And I’m also really intrigued by the varnish over paint idea - I didn’t even know that was possible so quite excited about that. I feel like my enthusiasm for finishing it off has been stoked by you all so thank you. (Although keep them coming!). Or maybe I should ask Colleen’s builder to decide for me too?! Hang in there Colleen!

A graphic patterned splashback could look good:

    Galleri · More Info

but the other option is to go for texture. Something like a honed silver or ice white quartzite would tie in the other subtle colours but provide a really interesting textural contrast to the smoother surfaces in the room. I have the green version of these behind my hob and when the lights hit them they look amazing. They need to be sealed prior to fixing and I would go for the honed rather than the riven

I love the tiles that colourhappy has suggested. I don’t think you would ever tire of them. Whilst I do like the tiles you have chosen, I think you could get fed up with them and I think they would dazzle my eyes. I love the kitchen and at the end of the day it’s you who has to live with it

Not sure if this link will work but just saw the picture and thought of your post. I wouldn't personally choose such brightly coloured tiles but they really brighten up this kitchen.

I too love colourhappy’s tiles. Or other, more subtly coloured tiles. And you could go for a graphic patterned wallpaper behind the new sofa.
Hi Colourhappy- is the geometric pattern tiles or large patterned slab..?

I am pretty sure they are tiles.

Definitely think you should go for a coloured tile. Looking at the tile you’ve picked personally it would make me dizzy but that style tile and colour would make the kitchen pop. Very jealous of your lovely kitchen. Suggestions below I think look lovely
  • 8 years ago

A safer option than the geometric tiles, but also bringing texture and interest to the kitchen would be to go for gloss tiles like these. They come in a variety of colours (Illumina, Tons of Tiles). And then a geometric wallpaper behind the sofa? I've also picked a new sofa for you. Just because I was virtually shopping anyway ;-)

Hi Lucy, I like your kitchen. Personally I like the tiles you chose, I would use them up to the oven height then I would use a blu paint up to the ceiling. It will create a vibrant environment.

Stunning room!! I love your tile choice and think it will bring some character to the room. I love the idea of you having them flush up to a wooden shelf at either side of the extractor like the image below (you might not need 2 at each side like the image, it might be more effective to just go for 1 and keep it more simple to tie in with your sleek style of kitchen). This would link the pieces you have in the living area of the room to the kitchen area too. It would be amazing to have some more interest on the walls in the living area where your sofa is too, making it an inviting part of the room.

Thank you all so much for your enthusiasm. It’s contagious as I feel very excited about it again. Love the idea of textured tiles Colourhappy. Jo- love those tiles but have them in the bathroom already (good taste!). Sam - I love the geometric cube style tiles which could really work. And Carolina I was looking at very similar corner sofa in the same colour to the one you virtually shopped for me and the wall paper is ace. I love the shelf idea, Wolfe, with the tiles, when I choose them, hitting up right against them as a natural break off point. I like the marble hexagon one’s Asifa suggested but think I’d need a strong colour somewhere too. I’m busy ordering samples of some of the suggestions so will keep you posted. Thank you again. You are all brilliant!

    Hello Lucy.
i am a Landscape Architect by proffession but I have recently started to resume my earlier interest in ceramics and a new interest in fused glass.
i make large platters and freestanding panels in fussed glass. i have a creative free flowing style.

You have a lovely simply designed kitchen and you need an attractive ideally softer focus.

My glass is all handmade, unique and I use pretty colours with varying themes. I enjoy echoing my landscape/ architectural interests ie maples in the rain. I can up load some images (when I've worked out how as I'm new to Houzz).
in the meantime take a look at www.katharinegillings.com.
Its a new website I'm learning how to set up but there are some images on the portfolio and shop page.
i can basically make you whatever size you like in whatever colour conbinations and theme
I'm currently making a very large platter to echo the wall paper in a newly designed property for the architect.
I'll try to see if I have any images on my phone to upload otherwise I need to use my computer.

I've just saw this and thought you might want to see it.. the positioning of the 2 shelves, and the tiles working up to the extractor would work perfectly!

Hi, we've only just seen your posting but you might like to consider an illuminated splashback. You can set the splashback to be static on one particular colour or to scroll through all the colours - it would certainly add a "splash" of colour in your lovely new kitchen! www.litetile.co.uk

@colourhappy re your comments on the honed tiles, I’ve sourced the silver grey quartzite to consider & have samples now but just wondered where you purchased your green ones from as supplier I’ve sourced for grey only have limited stock? Thanks
  • 8 years ago
    last modified: 8 years ago

Hi Vicki, I got them from here.

    https://www.stonetilecompany.co.uk/natural-deoli-green-quartzite-brick-tiles?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5YWQ3NLr2QIVyZ3tCh0ivwVQEAQYAiABEgLlvfD_BwE

The palette in my house (browns, olives, mustards) suits the green ones - I think that your scheme may suit the grey ones or the ones with grey and brown in. It was just to suggest that adding texture can be a solution. Mandarin Stone may be worth a look too.

I think these geometric tiles from Topps Tiles would look fresh and funky!
@colourhappy ah thank you for your reply.yes that’s where I sourced the silver grey samples from and was about to order but they are discounting those now so unfortunately not enough stock. My husband loved your green quartzite when I showed him last night. I’m unsure if they would complement cream gloss units and ural grey quartz w.top.

Looking at your second image down, at the floor, the units and the cooker, these caught my eye. Mandarin Stone.

    Oh, I love those!

I thought the colours in the first image would tie the floor (warmish) and units together?

Yep, that was what I thought too. First image looks perfect.

@colourhappy, The first one ticks all the boxes, for me. Perfect combination of light dark and warmth which ties in the kitchen and floor.

They look even better when presented without big white gaps in between. They look like they've been grouted a buff colour which looks amazing.

Your kitchen renovation is simply beautiful! I wanted to suggest if you would be interested in considering our splashbacks as an option to complete the look of your interior.

Please take a look at our website: www.alusplash.co.uk

Also, on our Houzz page, you will see a recent project with Benchmarx in the UK, where they have a white kitchen and an accent of our Olive green which just lifts the whole space.

You could choose to go for a darker shade to add an element of luxury to compliment your gorgeous lights and stools - perhaps Blueberry!

We would be happy to send you samples, should you like to consider our splashback panels.
