curb appeal upgrade
Hi, My husband and I bought a 1920's house and we added a front porch to it but it still need some work on the front curl appeal. What do you think I can do to bring it to life?

How can I improve the curb appeal here.
Comments (5)Flowers in those flower boxes would be a good start, and then I'd tear out the conctrete or whatever the surface is next to the house and extend the driveway further out, closer to the camera, to make up for lost driveway space. The down spout must be removed from he driveway. The steps up to the house seem to be a confused assembly of different materials and should be reformed into a cohesive entry stairway, with plantings flanking it, or pots of greenery/flowers on it. The garage seems to be a different color from the house and if that is the came, I would change it echo the colors of the house. In the foreground of the photo is an opportunity for some beautiful landscaping. Comments (16)Hi nick. Thanks. Yes, i have come to that realisation after being told it by everyone i speak to! So looking at hedging or other ideas for the side fences then shrubs / plants / flowers for the main parts. I'd be interested innyour ideas. On the other side if the fence, if you mean the road side, the footpath is right up against the fence. I'd say the footpath is maybe 1.5m wide, maybe a bit more....See MoreCurb appeal??!

To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Comments (8)Your house is very attractive but a little TLC is required. If possible depending on budget limitations, I would do the following to soften the edges and add a manicured, polished yet homely feeling to the house: Area needing attention: Front door and surrounds Issue: Lack of a focal point, has no presence and appears to recess into the house • Remove all potted plants from outside the front door • Remove the seat from under the main window • Rent/borrow a water power washer to clear away the moss/weeds • Paint the front door (if wood) a dolphin grey colour and add a door wreath (radiates warmth) • Purchase 2 potted Bay trees (Laurus Nobilis) to be placed either side of the newly painted front door to frame the doorway • Put up a postbox on the wall to the right of the front door • Add 2 external candle lanterns to enhance the ambience for house viewings...See More

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoLovely home! This is going to be so lovely when you are done. And building the front porch was a HUGE improvement. The house needed it to give it a more welcoming and inviting touch.
Just a couple of suggestions:
Others said the trim was too dark, and it is too dark. A paler color gray would work better. The dark color with the White House body is a stark contrast and doesn't say 'welcome' to your guests. Either color is ok, they just don't work well together. So you might want to change the colors to either 'bold and modern' or 'cozy'; your home can handle either.
The portico needs to have texture because it looks like flat plywood and doesn't flatter how cute the house can really become. You can add texture by hammering up similar wood siding as on the side of the house. If you can't locate that kind of siding, you can go with a different texture, such as pre-made shingles which can to cut and trim fit into the portico overhang. Pre-made shingles don't have to be painted either.
The paint on the horizontal rails of the porch needs to be the same color as the vertical rails.
The posts holding up the portico are too tiny and need to be beefed up, doubled in width; see the two photos below.
Also you are missing a post on the left side of the front door; you have two posts on the right of the porch and one post on the left of the porch. The porch needs another post on the left of the front door to create that symmetry .
