If you want the look of the fireplace you posted but are scared that the dark grey will flood your room, you could paint just the one panel/side wall with the grey, paint the fireplace frame white, and then paint the rest of the room a more light neutral colour. It will also create a more contemporary look and create more focus to your fireplace. Alternatively you may feel more safe to paint the fireplace frame a neutral colour to match the neutral walls. When you are ready to replace the fireplace, I would suggest a bio ethanol burner as a simple solution with minimal DIY work and an option of different styles. Looking for ideas for a feature wall in a Living Room with no chimney breast? Don't want to put TV over fireplace (too high) but can't figure out how to make shelving/cabinets look good at the sides of the fireplace...

I think a rectangular fire could look jammed in between the bookcases, unless you can find a short one... Maybe you could simplify the fireplace by changing the backing board for a pale colour (not beige) and changing the surround for a really streamlined boxy shape. You could keep the mirror above. You say there's a lot going on - if it's possible to rearrange the items in the recesses in the two bookcases so they are more symmetrical, eg have some books on both sides, some candles each side and so on, it would give a "calmer" look? Another thought - normally shelving either side on a fireplace is recessed in the alcoves whereas yours are in line with the fire surround. If you had a fake full height chimney breast built and brought the fireplace forward (would only need to be the depth of the shelving) it might make the shelves look less dominant
