When creating a traditional staircase should I choose one color for the risers and another for the rail? Should dark be on rail and lighter on riser? Should I stay with one color if bauillsters are white?

If your ballusters are going to be white, the most common way is to keep the risers white as well, and then choose the same wood species for the rail and treads. If you want more wood, then put in risers of the same species as well. In your example picture, the newel posts are white as well- I just did a staircase with maple treads, rail and newel posts, natural finish, keeping the ballusters and risers white. Very clean looking. Good luck!

I think I should have said treads for where you place your foot. That is what I was referring to. If the floor is dark stained oak do you think I should just keep treads and rails dark as well with white baullisters? Sometimes it looks as though two different stains were used with white baullisters. Thanks so much for your input. I'm stressing about this staircase.

I looked at door on houzz for a short time. Seems as though a few things come into play. If you want to accentuate the vertical lines of your entrance, go vertical. If you want a more understated look whereby we see your door and panels as one -- then go either same color as door on the handle if possible and the only things showing will be the lock. I prefer a smaller handle or a horizontal plane for a handle because horizontal is a more relaxed look. vertical creates tension. So, look under: Photos, then Modern, and type Front door in the search parameter. Hope this is helpful. :=)

I am not sure about a change in style - contemporary vs. traditional is usually an inherent personal preference and not something you skip. But I see that smaller, single story homes regain popularity as we, the Baby Boomers, are reaching retirement. Urban living and walkable neighborhoods are in high demand, while the large home in the sticks is depreciating in line with rising gas prices. Architecture has always changed with the economy and overall living conditions and will continue to do so. Wow! Hampstead Design Hub, those ideas and images are fab! We love the first image with the bright colours used against the grey. replace extension with glass?

Hi all We are interested in a terrace house with a full width extension to the rear, half two story (flat roof) other single story flat roof. Attached pic shows it and dimensions. I have north & south drawn on. There is no roof windows to let any light in. I think replacing the single story with a glass side extension could be great. Attached is one that spiked my interest. Would it be pointless getting on considering it is north facing? Or should we look at extending the second story at the shower room and bedroom 3 for ensuite and walkin closet? TIA
