Do you recommend using an oil base trim paint

I always have and we get a better finish. But there are some new water based products out from Sherwin Williams that we are starting to try. Oil is tough to work with and can yellow over time

Agree hardwick on the trim would be nice but was hoping to add something unusual or unexpected to the kitchen! A bit of drama, it's open plan and leads into a lounge area. Was thinking of downpipe for the chimney breast and hardwick white on the walls in that room to tie the two rooms together. Not feeling confident enough about my decisions though!!

Hi if you want dark colours through out your home you can use the dark colour on wood work example flooring if you go for dark oak do the doors and frame and skirting to a lighter tone of the floor or if would like to break the continuous of the colour of the door frame you can stain the skirting boards white or a neutral colour but white does bring the skirting board stand out

It looks very pretty. I would look at pics of painted floors versus whitewashed and see which you prefer then people can hopefully help with methods. I've used chalk paint but not on a floor. Annie Sloan sell floor lacquer so you don't need to use the wax which is very time consuming to apply, the lacquer can be rollered on. The only thing I would say is that it does not adhere to I think varnish made in the 80's and I find the White paint coverage is poor although not an issue if white washing. I wondered if there was a cheat method using zinsser to avoid sanding if using normal paint and have found this, no idea on how successful it is! http://www.zinsseruk.com/how-to-guide/how-to-paint-woodstained-or-varnished-surfaces/

My first instinct was to move it to a garage/basement for good storage but the more I think about it the more I think I'd prime inside and out with Kilz then apply a couple of coats of white semi-gloss (use good quality paint.. Benjamin Moore) in the same white that you'd use for all the trim in your room. Be sure to lightly sand and 'tack rag' between coats. If the handles are removable by all means remove them prior to painting...fill in holes, sand smooth and paint as previous sentence. Set up inside the way you find most functional. Buy nice new knobs ( maybe crystal?) and, if it is as tall as it appears, have crown molding installed to create a custom look. It is probably far better built than anything else you could find.
