Best use of kitchen space

I'm on a very limited budget & have no idea how to utilise my kitchen space. I'd like to have a small seating area how I'm not sure where to put it. Any help on the layout would be much appreciated!

I just wanted to explain my idea a little better for you. Easier now I am home with my own equipment at last :)

Here is quick look at the layout - so clearly not these items or colours as it's not on the styling but it shows you the idea for the seating and would be based on the dimensions of the space (This is an example of our basic 3D layout package).

When you say seating do you mean sofa style seating?

I think a built in bench style seating along the back wall with table and then chairs would improve the look of this space.

If you mean sofa seating then I would consider switching the direction.

I am recovering from a recent operation so hopefully this makes sense with no drawing -

I would create a half wall midway down splitting the space. The side you can see on entering I would create a bench seat on the wall with table and chairs creating the seating area. The back of that wall you can then place a small sofa looking out of the window. This would also zone the small play area where the toys can be kept, but out of view of the seating area when dining.

I am sorry to say you don't have room. You are only giving yourself 36" in front of the ovens and only 31" for passage on the opposite side and 42" is not enough between the island and the sink. You might find a smaller 30" wide x 48" moveable stainless steel prep table and placed in the opposite direction, it might work for additional counter surface but not give you the seating you would like.

I would use the same flooring throughout, give your separation of spaces visually with decor and I love Vancouver Day from C2 paint I have it all through my house in different strengths, very neutral so almost anything goes with it.

Sink in island - bear in mind that it could look messy unless you are meticulous. Hob in island - can be social to chat to those seating while you cook. Perhaps think about induction. They are just food for thought - best to discuss with your kitchen design company if you think they might work better for you.

I am almost at decision stage of planning for a single story house. I am keen to get the spaces clearly defined in the house -, ideas for the kitchen layout, general furniture layouts, bathroom layouts. I am struggling with this myself and my husband isn't any help either. I'm wondering has anyone here used a space planner and what value did you get from it? at what stage did you engage with them? also cost? is it worth it do you think?

Just an idea....
I think your dining table is too small for the space. I would consider a refectory table and a sofa that can be used as additional table seating. The sofa then has dual roles.
If budget is tight I would get an inexpensive (perhaps second hand) sofa and replace the legs with longer ones to raise it up. Replacement legs are easily sources on the internet and will likely screw in place.

Can you think of any clever ways of making the dining area without getting a carpenter in? Budget is tight. I did see a few photos of using Ikea book shelves as a bench or kitchen cabinet on there sides but it means you don't have a back.

Put storage for the toys under the seating so it's easy to get to and declutters the space. Maybe even run the seating down one wall so you can sit on it, play on it, lounge on it, move the table up and down, but ideally I'd want to face the garden with the seating to make the most of the light. I'd paint the side wall white to bounce more light into the room. I agree that the table looks a bit small. With a bit of planning you could build it in such a way that the toy kitchen sits withing the seating.

Hi, louisewjones, I had gathered up some banquette seating ideas...potentially for my kitchen/diner too. All the ideas mentioned above are great...check auctions/charity shops for a big long table. Your kitchen is lovely and contemporary so it could probably take a big old characterful table. Even a mishmash of chairs along with the bench (with storage which is invaluable).

Thank you all for your really helpful comments. If I was to run seating down the wall lengthways but I still wanted to somewhere to sit & look into the garden. What type of seating would you use?

How about something like the image below but instead of the white chair have something a little bigger like a carver or grandfather chair. Easy to pick one of these up second hand and you could paint or distress it how you wish. Add some cosy cushions and you've got a seat just for mummy:)
