Are 'His and Hers' sinks a good a idea?

Side by side so you can brush your teeth simultaneously, 'his and hers' sinks seem like a smart investment. The downside is that they take up a lot of space, and all of a sudden, you might need two mirrors, too!

If you've invested in a bathroom project, have you opted for side by side sinks? Do you love it or loathe it? And for those of you who have just the one sink to share with your partner and family, is this something you desire?

Just the one for us although we do have a second bathroom that we don't bother to use.

More sinks/basins means more cleaning and I'm not up for that.

If your other half goes in for wet shaves and leaves a tide mark of the remains you certainly need two basins. Would never go back to just one.

Are the walls elephants breath and the blind taupe? If so, I would add a taupe bed throw. Kelly hoppen has a few good ones on her website but I can't save the images. A velvet bolster cushion would also look great on the bed. I would add either a bed end stool or chaise sofa at the end of the bed. I've attached a link to one on ebay as it seemed very reasonable and you can change the leg colour. I'd go for plain grey silk curtains, next have some silvery grey one in their ready made range which seem reasonable ( apologies as you've painted but I'd hang the curtain rail higher as it will make the room taller). I'd add matching bedside lamps. A roundish decorative silver mirror over the middle of the headboard would look great. I'd also move the chest to the tv ŵall. I personally would just add art to the right hand ŵall if you're laying in bed, maybe some of the black and white Getty images from John lewis? I'd go for the more girlie ones. They're not particularly cheap but you can always buy the prints and have framed separately. Would love to see the room completely finished as it looks great already

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

His and hers sinks are great if both of you are getting ready at the same time on busy weekday mornings. Twin basins will also add a hotel feel to your bathroom too.

Neither of us like to have anyone in the bathroom with us, so it's not a thought in our house. The wife thinks it would be one more sink to clean! Personally i can't see the point, it just takes up space that could probably be better utilised elsewhere unless you live in a huge house with a massive bathroom. Let's face it, most of us do not!

Absolutely brilliant, my wife always leaves her sink cluttered and messy while mine is lovely and clean. Saves all the bickering, great investment. (Extra cleaning, takes two minutes!??!)

Yes a grubby basin can be a point of contention for a couple with opposing ideas of tidiness. I miss the his & her basins in my previous home which actually meant LESS cleaning. Now I invariably clean the taps and basin at least once a day whereas I used to clean the husband's basin once a week.

We have one extra wide sink with two independent taps. Doesn't take up as much space and only one, albeit larger, sink to clean.

I don't get the reasons for two sinks side by side. If I have to share a sink it's usually when I'm brushing my teeth with the kids and we manage just fine. When I shave, I make sure I clean the sink so that when someone else uses it they don't complain. Nope, just one sink is quite adequate thanks.

I would hate to have to share a bathroom at the same time with anyone, thank you very much! Ablutions are a private matter, so no need for double sinks,

I'd much prefer a dressing table with sink incorporated in the walk in or bedroom (have plumbed in bedroom for this but there's other bigger priorities to spend on first!). Much handier when you want the sink but privacy is non negotiable....

Just because there are 2 sinks does not mean both people use the bathroom at the same time. They simply have their own area when they get ready alone.

I fail to understand the love of large bathrooms, let alone ones with 2 of anything. As houses in general get smaller I prefer to see space maximised in the areas we send the most time and although we all use the bathroom every day we don't tend to dwell in there longer than necessary. I like a nice ergonomically laid out cosy and compact bathroom so I can have larger bedrooms upstairs and larger lounge and/or kitchen downstairs. In temperate climates the battle is also about being able to keep a bathroom warm and ventilated without breaking the bank, so again, smaller size reduces heating costs.

As above:- If you're not using the bathroom at the same time, no point in having two sinks unless you're O.C.D is worse than the wife's! Even she manages to share. I think it's just a design concept for really large bathrooms that the majority of us do not have.

I like the idea of a trough sink. It's kinda cute sharing a sink with your lover, but it's even better to have separate taps and your own space. That being said... if there is the possibility to have separate bathrooms... personally I'd prefer that!

I've always found this something of a cultural thing. It seems "de rigeur" to have 2 basins in the US, yet very seldom in the UK. Speaking entirely personally, I can think of few things worse than sharing my bathroom time with anyone else, so one basin will do nicely. Speaking as a bathroom showroom, selling an extra basin every time would of course be lovely....

Again... Simultaneous use of 2 sinks is not mandatory, any more than 2 chairs in the same room. It simply means a person does not have to begin their day faced with the other half's razor stubble, toothpaste remains, and wet tap. If you have the space, it is a little luxury that makes facing the morning easier. Many a time I glanced at the other sink and felt grateful, but I expect more ladies than men would empathise with this.

I'd love two sinks, but our en-suite is far too tiny. I dream of having an entire bathroom to myself tbh, but at least we don't have to share a bathroom with the children!

We find that many clients love his and hers sinks! All our units and tops are bespoke made to client specification also so it gives them more freedom of choice. Just some examples below!

We only have single basins in our house. However, I loved the style of a particular double basin. We have the same basin as a single. It doesn’t look the same but wanted the space for a bigger shower. Certainly wouldn’t have double basin because other half left a mess! Would just have to train him better! ;-) In my book, as adults, it’s just disrespectful to leave a mess and expect someone else to clean it, particularly in the bathroom!

Yes tamp75 but that is what some of us live with - a loveable but untrainable mess maker. It isn't disrespect; he honestly believes he has cleaned up and cannot see the problem. Actually when we had 2 basins he could see that mine was cleaner and tried harder!

I don't really like the waste of space, but then my wife and I do not need to share a sink at the same time, and I tend to shave in the shower!

Am I the only one one to share a bathroom at the same time with my husband. One uses the toilet while the other showers etc. Nothing wrong with that. If he didn't do it I would think there's something wrong! If we had a basin each I would get just as wound up with his toothpaste stains in his while I use my own cleaner basin. So nothing gained.

I'm glad this question was posted a was something I considered asking myself.
The thought of brushing teeth in earshot of the other is... ewww!, but quite right, a his and hers bathroom is the dream as who uses the room at the same time? If I could have my bathroom with a bath, and he has his own with a shower, I would.
I'm gauging this on "women with makeup", and "men with stubble" as the key issues with couples as well as who is the tidiest.
I love lots of sinks, even have one plumbed outside, double in the kitchen, plus one in the laundry, but in the bathroom I think it would be more of a show of appearance more than use. Maybe the second sink is far more practical actually in the dressing table in the bedroom or dressing room... an old idea but perhaps worth revisiting.

Ever since we put 2 basins in the bathroom in our previous house I could never go back to sharing a basin with my husband. Recently we installed big stone double basin unit in the bathroom in our new home - love it!
