The skirt is made of 3 sections of plywood with walnut veneer. I don't know all of your conditions so it would be hard to suggest how to open one of the panels. Your carpenter can help you work thru that. However, you might consider concealed Euro hardware that would open with a touch but you would see a small gap around the door. Another option would be to screw the 3 panels onto the backing and nail a small piece of trim covering the screws. Use small head screws and sink and fill. If you have to remove it, drive the nails thru the wood to pull the trim off to get to the screws. There would probably be little or no damage to the small trim.
