Could you give me advise on how to arrange my movie figures collection? I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.
I got this beautiful Batman statue for my birthday which I really want to display, but I can't seem to figure out where to place it?

    Need a porch?

Garden design on line thanks for your graphics we have a similar deck structure to the side of the house- its more protection from the elements we need at the front of the house. Dyctecture i had considered a floating canopy but couldn't visualise how it would look- thanks for the mock up. But I do need more shelter as we live in the west coast of Ireland and the weather here can be pretty wet and windy!! This is the main access to the house and on a wet day the entrance hall can get very wet. Gildaville, I like the idea of following the existing triangle shape but definately need a roof- i just can't visualise how it would look and what material it can be constructed from. I really appreciate your replies.

How can I improve the curb appeal here.

Flowers in those flower boxes would be a good start, and then I'd tear out the conctrete or whatever the surface is next to the house and extend the driveway further out, closer to the camera, to make up for lost driveway space. The down spout must be removed from he driveway. The steps up to the house seem to be a confused assembly of different materials and should be reformed into a cohesive entry stairway, with plantings flanking it, or pots of greenery/flowers on it. The garage seems to be a different color from the house and if that is the came, I would change it echo the colors of the house. In the foreground of the photo is an opportunity for some beautiful landscaping. You have your work cut out for you, but nothing that you couldn't do over the next 3 months!

    Photo wall help for stairs

I must say I find the tall ones , a bit disproportionate to the rest , try it with one third off, (the top sheets) and lets see . I would then align the middle tall one(now reduced) to the bottom of the one next to it ,then I would also reduce the distance between all the frames to about 4" in between. Even if the display is not the whole length of the stairs, as long as the distance at the bottom of the stairs is the same as the distance at the top of the stairs, it will work,

    New sofa style

Hi Lisa, nice sofa. I had a red sofa for 10 years and loved it ( though mine was fabric) I've changed the kitchen/ living room and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I gave in and put in a grey leather sectional one and I must say it's much easier to decorate around. Are you in Ireland? Have you heard of the 1933 company, they have very nice suites. Red makes a big statement! Just my 2 cents worth, good luck!

Had a house like this in the inner city of Detroit in a neighborhood downtrodden. There is one in every city, a bit eccentric but they cause no harm. The person in Detroit collected items and made art out of them, very artistic, and nobody complained as in a neighborhood that did not care about the upkeep of their houses.

bevballew, Actually, from what I understand that isn't true. There were and have continued to be lawsuits about that house. I remember reading about it and everyone in the neighborhood complained as they DID care about the upkeep of their houses. AND the guy didn't even own the house or live in the neighborhood, so it was a criminal act. Have no idea where this house is, or whose and don't want to malign them if it's something they consider artistic, but it does matter if it's something way out of line in terms of what others care about. It doesn't matter how "downtrodden" the neighborhood is, people do care about their houses and neighborhoods, I have found. So it is something to consider no matter what the neighborhood.

In the Netherlands you can tell in what type of neighbourhood you are by looking at the length of time christmas deco (especially lights) is on the houses. Or by the amount of gnomes and/or mini windmills. Mostly rusty cars with flat tires are involved too. Dutch rednecks, you could call it. Nice people doing their own thing and minding their own business, until they reach boilingpoint.

Did not mean to be offensive. If we are talking about the same house I have actually driven down that street. The persons artistic ability and eye were quite amazing but I speak from first hand knowledge it was in a run down neighborhood. In case you are unaware certain areas of Detroit have homes falling apart. It is very very sad and I feel bad for those unable to get out of those homes. But there is also drug trafficking in Detroit. Like I said, I drove down that street and the surrounding area and I know what I am saying. It was fun to see the creativity but the city is in bad shape. There are streets with one house on it, totally dilapidated. By the way, do you live in Detroit?

I live in a rural community about 35 mins. south of Detroit. For the most part there are areas on the outskirts which are very well maintained and pride is evident. There are also some very run down areas inner city but one has only to look at the past leadership in office. Voters not only elected Kilpatrick once but then turned around a re-elected him even though corruption was blatantly obvious and proven. The unethical behavior, corruption and misappropriation of funds continued and no matter who has attempted to step in and clean up the mess, there are those arrogant ignorant council members who don't want "outsiders" telling them what they need to do so they just sit on their fannies and be-cry being misunderstood. With the leaders they have had in the past, this unfortunately has added to the decline. Now that Governor Snyder has appointed an Emergency Financial Manager, perhaps there is hope for a better Detroit.

I agree with you Shirlee. You have summed it up well! I believe Detroit will come back! No doubt! Dan Gilbert has now started the progress and many wealthy business owners in Detroit will follow suit. We have had a corrupt city government and thanks to Kim Worthy she is cleaning it up. I hear there will be more to come to prosecute of the crooks who have ruined this city. We are now, finally headed in the right direction...and yes need to get rid of the city council.

Thanks, bevballew .... there are many good things beginning in Detroit with the rebirth and renaissance in the central business district in which old buildings are being renovated into restaurants... lofts... condominiums, etc. Quickens Loans moved their operations there within the past couple years and it's made a big impact on the area as will one of the healthcare companies that usually have their business located in foreign countries.

There have been ongoing renovations to things such as the Riverwalk areas, Theatres, music venues that are second to none. There are people friendly activities which are always flourishing such as the urban park named Campus Martius which has ice skating in the winter, concerts in the summer and the Bistro Fountain is something to see as well... I could go on and on... but unless others open their minds and see it with their own eyes then Detroit is still going to carry the stigma of a dead city.

Don't get me wrong... I am not a city kind of person. I was raised in a very small rural community about 200 miles north of Detroit but I do visit the city for some of it's wealth of activities. The North American Auto Show hosts so many journalists from around the world that come to cover it.... Mike Illitch has been a major contributor to so many great things which have become part of his legacy to Detroit. The Palace of Auburn Hills is an amazing place to go for concerts and sporting events.... then there's Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers...and now the highest paid pitcher in all of baseball history... Justin Verlander... this will be a season to remember for years to come... GO TIGERS !!! Then there's the Detroit Lions... and Detroit Redwings... and the Pistons.

So for all of those who dog Detroit... dog it for it's past leadership... but there is no justification for dogging it for it's urban renewal which brings new life to the city and jobs with it as well.

Shirlee. Detroit is on the up. It will become a vibrant city again. I see it as the new Chicago. Coleman Young and Kwame destroyed it. We have too many wealthy people that not only have a business interest in Detroit but like us all we love our city and Dave Bing can have some credit for starting its rebirth. You have hit the nail on the head! Go Detroit! We have many great people who care about Detroit. I think they had to wait until Kwame got out. And the foolish Kwame still does not get it! Glad you stated the facts. I don't get the stupidity of those who voted for Kwame. I think some did not think how much of a crook he was!
  • Shirlee
    Bevballew.... A M E N !!!

You have also made a great point. KWAME just doesn't see that he has done anything wrong! He had the chance to do great things for the city of Detroit and make history in a good way. At the age of 30, he was the youngest Mayor to be elected. I also believe that if given the opportunity to run again he would be re-elected again by his loyal following because many have publicly stated that they still believe in him. *Shaking head in disbelief* To quote a very memorable Forrest Gump.... "Stupid is as stupid does, sir".

Unfortunately, the residents of Detroit who lived during the era of Coleman A. Young, were very narrow sighted and history repeats itself as it did with the Kwame Kilpatrick era of crime. Only real difference is that Coleman kept his activities quiet and Kwame's arrogance is what eventually led to his demise. If it wasn't so sad I'd laugh at the fact that Kwame is now whining that his knee hurts and needs to be allowed out of prison to be treated for it. I think we all know what that would lead to since there is a sizable amount of money that was emptied out of his bank account and now untraceable.... wouldn't you love to have a few million $$ tax free?

Like I said, I am not much of a city gal but with all the wonderful investors who DO BELIEVE in Detroit and it's rebirth. I can't remember the visionary's name but he wants to invest in a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR overhaul to turn Detroit into a new "Paris" since Detroit was modeled after Paris years ago with it's architecture and rich history. This would put the city back on the map as a place that others will want to visit. Entertainment, sports venues, bistros, shopping and it would be along the river in a quaint atmosphere.

One thing I've long wanted to do since I moved downstate is to be able to see the train station renovated. I have a postcard photograph of my grandmother as a very young woman and one of her friends who had taken the train from Tawas down to the city for the day. They were standing on the steps of the train station and it had to be around 1916. I would love to have the opportunity to stand on the same step and have my photograph taken and then frame the two pictures to put with my genealogy.
  • bevballew

That pic would have been awesome at the train station. What a nice story! Yes this weeks paper talked about replicating Paris. Wouldn't that be cool. It is a city waiting to be created and designed with an endless possibility and I see it happening...now,that Kwame is out and they are going after more of,the crooks! Poor Kwame. You are right. It is sad.

What a great time for Detroit... in the absence of the likes of Kwame ... his crooked friends and other fallen in the corruption brigade. It's going to be exciting to see these changes come about in the next few years. You obviously live close to the city.... so you will see these changes come about up front and personal.

I do hope that they keep restoring the older buildings that were part of the landscape for the past 100 - 150 yrs ... such a variety of architecture influenced from many different cultures and eras. The ornate details on these buildings is such a lost era of artistic beauty as shown in the photos on this link:
