Is the fireplace/brick wall whitewashed brick ?

I have a large red brick fireplace which has quite dark mortar. I love the fireplace but in a north facing room it is really too dark. I want to keep the fireplace and have checked out a lot of web pages instructing how to whitewash a brick fireplace. However, they all look to have gone the other way and are too light and look 'artificial' Your fireplace looks very natural and these are the colours I would like my brick and mortar. Just wondering how I could get this look on my fireplace.
