Typically soapstone has a chalky look / finish, until or unless it is oiled. Did you oil this piece?

Yes, the client desired the darker look, so this soapstone was oiled the day before the space was photographed.

Soapstone, when aged,
typically should not look chalky. Keeping it pristine with
soapstone oil or soapstone wax always makes it look great!

ms1zebra, Thanks for your comment and interest! River-rock finished aluminum is a great surface. Its unfinished textured top allows for increased durability for work surfaces. It is resilient with heat, stains, oxidation, but will show signs of use if heavy objects are dropped on or slid across it or cutting is done on it with steel knives. Perhaps when folks think of aluminum as a material, they think about unfinished flat aluminum sheet, which is not a good or even available choice for kitchen surfaces. It looks very pretty. I would look at pics of painted floors versus whitewashed and see which you prefer then people can hopefully help with methods. I've used chalk paint but not on a floor. Annie Sloan sell floor lacquer so you don't need to use the wax which is very time consuming to apply, the lacquer can be rollered on. The only thing I would say is that it does not adhere to I think varnish made in the 80's and I find the White paint coverage is poor although not an issue if white washing. I have a similar laminate floor to yours with white walls and it looks ok, the key really is to try and warm the look up a bit with colors in accessories etc. (before and after). A plywood with a wood finished floor might look a bit extreme though, perhaps you could look at staining the ply a darker shade such as a blue? Having the 2 woods looking similar could potentially look a bit weird.
