I'm planning on fitting a new fireplace and I'm trying to decide whether I'd like the tiled hearth to be flush with the sitting room wooden floor (engineered wood) or for the hearth to be 20 mm higher than the floor, with a lip, so the wooden floor slides slightly underneath. Any thoughts? Pros/cons?
The floor has not been laid yet. I plan to install a free-standing fire basket.
It depends on the style of your fireplace Stephen - traditional looks more comfortable with a step. Modern you can more easily go with flush. Your photographs almost answer your own question.
