Need idea for Kitchen Remodel

Hi,

My husband and I are under contract to buy
a house. The kitchen was updated 15 or
so years ago and while not bad is not our taste. The photos below are from the MLS and Appraisal (unfortunately don't have any more pics right now).

The fridge/counter area w/wine fridge are across from the island.

We would love opinions on layout options, materials, paint color, lighting etc as we are completely stumped on how to make this work.

Only ideas for layout we have so far- we
like having the open wall to the family room and would consider opening it up
completely. We’d like to move the
stovetop off the island and onto a wall (possibly where the wall oven is now) We’d prefer to have seating at the island.

As far as style- we basically like the “in look” right now- white
cabinets, marble countertops, farmhouse sink, etc but are open to
opinions! We will be keeping the
flooring.

I think you need a kitchen/interior designer. You are stumped because what you are talking about - removing refrigerator wall (which might be structural) and moving appliances, gaining seating at an island open to the other areas of the house, while keeping the same floor, is a major undertaking. If you are going to do that much work and spend that much money, in the ideal world you want to end up with a kitchen with a good work triangle. A kitchen designer can help you get there. If you decide a major renovation is too much, a kitchen designer can help you decide what to do and not do and get as close to the look you want as possible.

Don't know your budget, or if cabinets are in good condition. I think the cabinets are really pretty. Maybe paint the island white and remove the countertop. Then get a larger countertop that extends for seating.

White marble or quartz countertops would really change the look of the room.

Hi Maria. It's a lovely kitchen and I must admit I like the white so would probably change the accessories. I would add a huge sunburst clock or mirror above the cabinets (can't work out if it's a clock or mirror above the fire). Add a statement light over the table. Try a coloured splashback behind the cabinets. Add some coloured stools. I would say paint the kitchen chairs but I can see they are good quality! If you do want to paint then either blues, violets or even a very soft grey if you add some coloured accesories. Do make sure the colour blends with the lounge though as you can obviously see through.

I agree with maikola, turn under the stairs into storage. Maybe combine with a little desk for when the kids are older. I'd swap your dining and living area around. Have the tv on the long left wall with a small sofa a couple of feet in front of the doors and one opposite the tv. It does look as if a 5ft table would fit in the kitchen though? If you don't want to fill too much of the kitchen space consider a bench one side for you to use with chairs for the kids on the other. The area outside the kitchen could then be for the kids to play

Hi. I think a Chesterfield would be nice, you can find some small ones c5ft or so which will allow for a narrow lamp table or trunk. I'd go for a ŵall to wall bookcase behind the sofa with a couple of ŵall lights affixed. I don't know what styles you like but perhaps french doors painted in a dark grey to give a crittall look. Does the tv fit in the alcove if you were to add shelves and then add art over the fire with a large mirror on the ŵall facing you? I would keep colours light (is the kitchen grey?) and although it would fill the space a little I might add a narrow upholstered footstool which you can use as extra seating and/or add a tray on one half which you can accessorise

Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S. Conservatory is a junk room at the moment, facing a fence on the right hand side. The garage is used as a utility.

You may keep the flooring. But be aware - any change in the footprint (island, wall oven, or opening up a wall) will reveal floor that doesn't look like the rest of the kitchen (age, finish, etc.), OR no floor. If flooring work is not in your budget, you should strive to maintain the current footprint, even if you replace the cabinets.

Nice cabinetry! But if your going to recoat them make sure you have someone who knows what they are doing, or you will have a disaster on your hand... and its not going to be cheap to do it right.

White...ummm IDK about that with your existing finishes but either way do your fluting in a different color too maybe even two tone the uppers. My two bits

Well this is probably really late in the game and you are done. I would make the counters black for contrast there is black quartz or black Corian. I would replace the high table because it doesn't seem to be the righ scale for the room and the wood color is to me is creating a busy look to much wood look. I would extend the island counter for seating and perhaps put a built in sitting area with colored pillows where the wall is. Put a brighter rug in front of the sink and perhaps replace the wood front of the two cabinets on either side of the sink with glass to lighten up the cabinets.

I would break up the floor with a rug to bring some color other than wood into the room on the pass through side of the island. I like the wood cabinets. I would use another color paint that compliments the color of the wood and perhaps the backsplash the same darker color of the counter tops.

It really is a very workable kitchen and seems solid. Paint, rugs, changing countertops and backsplash and freplacing table is how I see it.
