Twin beds in guest room?

I'm thinking of updating our guest room and considering twin beds instead of the queen we presently have and would like pros and cons of this.
Queen bed size is 66x80. XL twin is 39x80 and we have the room for two twin beds.
Our guests consist of father/son, mother/daughter visits, two girlfriends visiting and married couples while they don't have relationship problems, do have sleep issues. Crazy leg syndrome, thrashing, sleep arena etc. Also have married couples without any issues but normally sleep on king beds at home.
Would twin beds be a complete turn off if you were a guest?
Our design style is contemporary so they would not look juvenile or dorm roomish.
This room is not needed for any other purpose besides guests.

I'm getting ready to redecorate my guest bedroom and use two twin beds. Twin beds are much more versatile than one bed.

This is the look I'm going for.

A lot of couples would prefer the queen bed. But in your situation, twin beds would obviously suit a lot of your visitors better than a queen.

So I'd say get the twin beds. Then, when you invite couples, let them know the sleeping arrangements, and offer to help them find a hotel if they don't want to sleep in twin beds. Let them make the choice.

I've heard that there are connectors that will make two twins into a king-size bed. Depending on what else is in the room, that might be an option, but you'd also have to buy king bedding, and have a place to store it.

I did twin XL beds in my guest bedroom because it is a small room and having each bed against a wall opened up the center of the room. In the center I have a desk/etagere type piece with a chair that provides a desk surface and storage. No complaints from guest. We used a high end mattress. I've also had my younger DS use the room for a sleepover with a friend when they didn't want to use sleeping bags and floors!

My ideal guest bedroom, if I had the room, would be like a hotel, with 2 full size beds.

Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

Take out sofa, use beanbags and those blow up seats for their friends. Coloured rugs for tumbling and crawling on. Supersoft teddy bear blankets so they can curl up. Add in one of those soft blanket boxes for toy storage and so you have somewhere soft to perch when you are with them. Paper half way up the wall in the wall paper that kids can draw on, so they can decorate in whatever colour they like and you won't mind. A childs lift up desk, bookcase and some crazy lamps in weird colours. Then close the door, collapse on the sofa that you have moved, breathe a sigh of relief and thank your lucky stars that you have another room for the kids to go to. (Grab wine and pretend they aren't yours for half an hour! ;-) )

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!

If it all fits in then why not. I don't think the desk will go with the bed or maybe it would work it the desk was painted. Do you need the desk or could you use a smaller console table for working/doing things from ? Not a fan of sliding doors would rather swop the door so it opens the other way if space is an issue. What is going on the shelves are they needed ?

I've got two guest rooms, one with twin beds, one with a couch that opens into a king sized beds. My guests, when they have a choice, prefer the room with the twin beds.

We just vacationed in Europe, and everywhere we stayed, rental apartment, hotels, friends' home, had twin beds pushed together, usually with one bottom sheet holding them together. It was fine! Not sure I'd want to LIVE with it that way. It is, actually, what we have in our guest room. It's an x-long twin with trundle. When a couple stays (or the 6'4" exchange student), we hold them (the mattresses, that is) together with a fitted king matress pad and sheet.

bpat-- I was just about to write the same thing about the beds in Europe. Actually, we decided on this arrangement for one of the rooms at our beach house. I usually make the beds up as indindividual twins, but have a king comforter on the top. I also have king sheets and individual comforters. Setting it up this way leaves a lot options.

We have twin beds in our guest room because we like the flexibility....two unrelated people can share the room more comfortably....plus I think it looks very welcoming and we have the space. When I traveled on business, I always appreciated the second bed as a place to spread out my stuff.

I think two twins is much more functional. Especially, the XL ones.

I can't think of a married couple who couldn't sleep apart for a night or two. If not, they can scoot them together!

Taking this one step further. I now have twin beds in a daughter's old room. When my brother and his wife came I rearranged the room so that the beds were together.
A friend of mine put twin beds in her daughter's old room and she says that she leaves them apart , no matter who is staying over.
So I think anyone staying over could just move the beds together if they chose to?

Thanks for the response. My first search just came up with images suitable for children and dorm rooms and that's why I was doubting myself.
When I did a search for adult twin beds, many hotel images in other countries came up. And a very sophisticated look which I am going for.
Will post pictures when I accomplish it.

I recently changed to twin beds (from a King) in our guestroom.

One thing to consider is that its not easy finding adult bedding for twins anymore. There are some selections but no where as many options as you find in Queen and King sizes.

I would definitely go for XL twin beds; at least for my family regular twin is too short.

We have two singles in our DDs room that can it be pushed together because they are on separate walls--- one has the headboard on the wall and projects out and the other is lengthwise along a wall. But even though the beds can't be pushed together most people choose that room.

I think it is a great idea. I would love to do that, but the room is pretty small. I don't think it has to look childish at all. I love the pic oakleyok posted. I've also seen a set of twin poster beds that look great (if you have the space). All the best!

I have a daybead iwith a pop up trundle in one of my guest rooms. It can be used as one large bed or two separate, and doesn't take up as much room as either. There's still enough room for a dresser, chair, and a table that's used as a nightstand. It also gets used as a sofa when the grands come over and when they have an overnight. ;o)

It's so interesting to see this post, since just today I was thinking about friends whom I'd love to have visit, and I know they use separate beds. So for the first time I was considering alternatives with only one guest room available--which we currently have set up with a queen bed. It's interesting to hear how many others have the twins available for guests, and I too, recall that when we've been in Europe, it was that way.

We have twins in our guest room and wouldn't do it any other way though we have room for a queen. Twins provide flexibility for all combos of guests and if there is a single guest they can use the extra unused bed for their luggage (though I do have a luggage rack at the end of each twin also). Can't think of a married couple who would object to twins for a night or 2 except maybe a honeymoon couple who would probably prefer a hotel anyway and in 20 years have never had newlyweds stay with us and don't imagine we ever will. Twins are so versatile and look very nice in a bedroom.

We have one of our guest rooms set up with twins. We don't use it as much as the other two, but we love having the option to house multiple college girls and their cousins. It is a sophisticated room. I'll send a photo later, if you wish.

Our guest bedroom isn't very large to begin with, and is on the narrow side. Like patty_cakes, we have a daybed with a pop-up trundle bed in our guest bedroom. When my parents are here, we pull the trundle bed out, and put it against the adjacent wall. They like that set-up, since they normally sleep on two twin mattresses (on one king bed platform) in their own home--dad kicks in his sleep!

I am not sure if there is enough space between the dresser and the daybed to set up the trundle between the two (dresser can't slide over, because there wouldn't be enough clearance to open and close the closet door). Also, with it being that tight a space, there is a concern about the dresser getting nicked, dinged, or scratched by the trundle bed frame (eg., when a guest is getting in/out of bed).

If overnight guests aren't happy with an adjacent bed set-up, there are a couple of hotels right up the road.....

We used to have our old king-sized mattress in the guest bedroom. It took up almost the entire room! LOL At the end of the day, we (DH and I) are the ones living here day-to-day. We need to have the space work for us for the majority of the time. Using a twin-sized daybed (with a hidden trundle bed underneath), frees-up floor space, and keeps the room from looking crowded when it's not being used for the once or twice a year weekly visits from my parents.

As a guest traveling with my husband, I would much prefer twin beds rather than the one full size bed we have to sleep in when visiting my parents and MIL - both of them have full size beds in their guest rooms. Even though dh and I are not large people, we have a king size bed at home so trying to sleep together in a full size bed is miserable. I would not mind at all sleeping in a twin while a guest at someone else's home.

That said, the master bedroom at our beach house has twin beds pushed together, with a king size egg crate thing on top and king size bedding over top. I can't even tell while sleeping in it that it is not a king size mattress. If I remember correctly though, there might be some sort of mechanism that we attached to the bed frames to hold them together so the beds don't move apart. I suppose if you have the storage space, you could keep king size bedding on hand if people wanted to push the beds together (but really, I can't imagine as a guest in someone else's home having them go to this trouble).

Check out Bed, Bath, and Beyond for twin bedding. I just purchased this set (complete with the elephant pillows which I thought were really neat) for our twin bed guest room. I got a white bedskirt and am using white sheets with it. It can be used with a regular twin or an XLong.

I love the idea of twin beds! You can really have so much fun with them and the room can be that much more interesting.

I always seem to find comforter or quilts that I love and then look to find its a twin! I recommend looking at Ross and TJMaxx. Also, Overstock has a lot to choose from. I tend to always find the best deals on the cutest stuff at Ross.

If you're interested in white duvet covers that zip in a nice percale, I can recommend Inn Style, which is a company that caters to BandBs and small hotels. I've bought duvet covers and euro shams from them for two bedrooms and they are all for adults.

If you like vintage furniture, you'll be in twin bed heaven. So many unloved and high end master bedroom furniture suites are absurdly affordable because of the twins.

Unfortunately my most frequent guest is too tall for a twin bed--skip the tall footboard if you have taller guests.

These beds are from my childhood and couldn't bear to part with them when we moved.
I was worried they wouldn't fit in the room, but they work and I'm thrilled I was able to keep them.
I think in your situation it would be the best choice.

Annie - love your room.

I like the look but I really think it all comes down to how your guest room is used. Our guest room is not used very often and when it is it's either one person or a couple. Most couples I know like to sleep together. Plus, I have an antique bed that has been in our family that I use.

It also would depend on what other furniture you have to use in the room and the windows/doorways, etc. In our guest room, due to the placement of windows, I'd have a hard time situating two beds.
