grass under trees

I'm helping to look after a property that has bee pretty neglected over the years. Among other landscape problems, there is grass growing right up to the trunks of several big old cedars. Of course many of the roots are rising higher than the level of the grass making mowing a problem, but more importantly, it all just looks very unsightly. The grass is growing poorly for quite a radius (duh), and the trees themselves aren't doing that well either. They've been limbed up a bit--maybe ten feet?

What would you all suggest I do?

Cut grass down to soil with weed whacker don't hit roots! in order to kill the grass (don't use herbicides due to proximity of tree roots either) and smother with a biodegradable (i.e. not the ground up tire stuff)mulch.

This will keep the grass out, provide a unified texture under the treee stopping it from looking ratty, provide nutrients, and presever soil moisture. Mulch is the answer!

You could either do what the person above me suggested or if you would rather have something that you don't have to maintain quite as much you could plant some plugs of ground cover and just trim them back on occasion. These will do well in the shade of the trees.

Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!

You can go far enough out on your slope so the vertical distance from the ground at your existing terrace and the slope is 3' or less. There are lots of retaining wall systems you can DIY there at the 3' limit and backfill to level a larger area. You might take in dirt when someone excavates for a pool, for instance - contact the pool contractors in your area and offer to take dirt for them as spring comes. you can also borrow the dirt from your own land further out. Once you make a larger flat area, treat the area where it slopes off from it with some thoughtful planters surrounding 6-10 wide / 4' deep "stairs" . Your leveling above will make the transition area a bit more steep . . so use this area for kitchen garden / raised beds that you sit at from the terrace side and walk up to from the bottom. The slope between should be stairs and on the outside edges you can use groundcover or plant more edibles. Then you'll always have herbs near the kitchen. The stairs will be large and wide enough to provide more seating or even be a play stage with audience arrayed below. Consider shade and where you want it when you plant trees. Deciduous trees are wonderful in colder climates as they give shade only in the summer and then provide architecture but no leaves for allowing winter sun in . . . Think of the land as a series of "rooms" with functions. The larger flat area will allow you to provide a dining terrace behind the grill area and expand your seating where you have the french doors. Your dining area might benefit from a pergola / open frame / trellis above that eventually you grow some lovely pole beans up on. . .

The rules may have changed but when we built our extension the wall adjoining our neighbour had to be completely within our own boundary. It looks as if your neighbour has continued along the party wall and therefore half the depth of the wall is on your land. It might be worth getting a chartered building surveyor to check it out as otherwise it may cause difficulties when either you or your neighbour come to sell. If I'm wrong about this maybe a professional on here could correct me. Other than that I think you should make the best of the little private courtyard it has afforded you by using plants in pots and climbers to soften the wall.

Your house is very attractive but a little TLC is required. If possible depending on budget limitations, I would do the following to soften the edges and add a manicured, polished yet homely feeling to the house: Area needing attention: Front door and surrounds Issue: Lack of a focal point, has no presence and appears to recess into the house • Remove all potted plants from outside the front door • Remove the seat from under the main window • Rent/borrow a water power washer to clear away the moss/weeds • Paint the front door (if wood) a dolphin grey colour and add a door wreath (radiates warmth) • Purchase 2 potted Bay trees (Laurus Nobilis) to be placed either side of the newly painted front door to frame the doorway • Put up a postbox on the wall to the right of the front door • Add 2 external candle lanterns to enhance the ambience for house viewings

Ring each tree (remove sod by hand/shovel being careful not to damage roots and create a ring around the tree). Turn in some compost to the soil again being careful not to damage the roots and cover with 3' cedar mulch. Water thoroughly if in a dry climate. You have now added nutrients, given the trees a good drink, and preserved that moisture with mulch. The mulch will help keep the grass from returning. Weed out as necessary.

Furnache, are you suggesting that the ground cover will crowd out the grass and therefore the grass won't continue to grow up through the ground cover??

Aside from what is good or not good over tree roots, there are a couple of competing issues--what kind of "look" is most important and what kind of maintenance. Questions include, does the idea of a bit of straggly grass just offend you 'cause it's not neat and tidy;, could it just look best somewhat natural; or does the area really look quite shabb;, are you interested in creating a specific garden area and tending it?

"Mulch" can give a uniform (though dull) appearance, but it then becomes a substrate for weed seeds; and also the grass will like to grow into it more than it did the bare ground--more so if you have an invasive grass species. It can be fairly easy to pull a few weeds out of mulch, but that depends. It depends on what's going on elsewhere on the property and in the neighborhood as to what seeds tend to crop up (?nearby maples? birds bringing specific seeds? ). Re: the grass, have to determine if need an impermeable, or nearly so, barrier between mulch and lawn. Then you have to think, mow-strip or weed-whack the edging.

similar but not exact for a ground cover--barrier issues, some weeding. These chores then contrasted with the upkeep of weed-whacking the lawn grass and how it looks on its best day. The more the area is VERY inhospitable to plant growth--say because of root competition and dryness--the more you might be able to have a lightly mulched area that doesn't grow much.

Also these issues are bigger or less big depending on the area you are dealing with--if a small area, you could try most anything and not lose too much. If a very large under-tree area, then more planning required.
