Design of built in

We are trying to emulate this built in but with cabinets along the bottom and no buffet in the middle. The builder is having a difficult time trying to figure out how to have stained wood in front, painted wood in back. It's beautiful and clean looking and I thought would be simple, but it's proving to be a challenge so much so they are ready to abandon. Would you please share how it was designed/assembled? Did you attach the stained pieces to paint grade?
