I'm interested in the process of laying the timbers in the driveway. Is there any special material laid down first, or was the ground just leveled? How deep are the timbers buried in the ground (if at all), and how deep is the gravel?

As for other types of paving there is a layer of compacted road base and sand blinding. The sleepers have small concrete haunches to hold them in place.

I like the concrete has a Mediterranean feel but would introduce some colour through pot plants. If you are creative add some colour using mosaic designs to a basic pot. Colouring the door black will draw more attention to the pathway. Paint the door in bright shades – spring or autumn colours.

Gravel driveway for 1930s red-brick!

We are having the same dilemma, albeit we have a 1913 Edwardian red brick house. I've bought a dozen bags of gravel and still haven't found the right one. The golden gravel looks terrible, greys look depressing and pinks jar too much with the red brick! We are leaning towards Cotswold stone but I'm concerned this is too traditional (the rest of our landscaping is contemporary). I've concluded I don't like gravel but having spent £££'s on the rest of the landscaping gravel is my only option. Sorry I can't be helpful but sometimes it's nice to know your not the only one having a dilemma!

Hi Niamh, as you say, Raveena sandstone is very colourful but I think your house could take it as it is quite neutral and the tones would blend. Also remember that the expanse of paving will be broken up with the addition of furniture and planting. I could see a large cream umbrella, cream cushions and some swaying grasses working in this dreamy, rural setting !
