Help:Privacy hedge for front of house, tight space!
Hi There
I need your help, my house is on the main road, with a school right opposite it. Need to create privacy with hedges. The space is rather tight, as we have parking right in front of the house

18 days agoSo will you be removing some of the tarmac to accommodate the hedge? Planting will depend whether there is good soil under the tarmac, if not, then you need to add some good topsoil to the planting holes. As you already have quite a tall wall there I wonder if small trees would be a better choice as hedges do take some time to reach the preferred height. Small trees like Mountain Ash, Hawthorn, Amelanchier and Crab Apple. Dwarf fruit trees are also a good choice.There are many shrubs that can be shaped into a hedge as below. The beech hedge’s leaves go a coppery brown in winter and then fall off in the spring to accommodate the new shoots. My favourite is the Ilex, looks a bit like box but has none of the diseases. Avoid Leylandii as it can grow enormous. The red hedge is Photinia Red Robin and a fast grower.

Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. I will have to paint the patch when it's off....See MoreGarden help
Comments (25)Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents....See MoreFront garden space
Comments (7)I agree re Skimmia, also look at Daphne odora and Sarcococca (both have fantastic scent), Viburnum davidii, Hellebores for early flowers and Astrantia and Geraniums for summer colour. Improve the soil before planting by adding loads of rich compost or rotted horse manure....See More

17 days agoIf you don’t mind not being able to see outside then window film might be a good option. Simple to use and very effective. You could go with a simple frosted glass look or something with more pattern if you wish. If you google window film you should see several suppliers. Etsy have a good range.
